A common question I receive here on the site and which involves Professional Guidance and Career Coaching is: “Will I be able to work during the day and go to college at night?” After all, in many circumstances, it is necessary to work before having completed training. Therefore, in this text, I will talk about this aspect of academic life and establishing a career.

The importance of the study

Not much needs to be said about the importance of having a certain background. If we finish high school and do not study further, we will have an average education, that is, we will have learned a series of information (some even complex) but which will not be very useful in the job market.

In order to level the entry of workers and raise the previous level, in the last decades having a Secondary Education ended up becoming a prerequisite to enter the market. Of course, there are still vacancies that require only elementary school or not even that. But the vast majority of vacancies require at least high school.

After high school or concurrently, it is possible to take a technical course to gain more knowledge and work in a specific area. Unfortunately, unlike in many countries, here the opportunity to study from the age of 15 in a technical school is still a rare and often regional opportunity.

Well, in summary then, we can say that more years of study – in a technical course – or in a graduation will bring more opportunities to get a job in the future. There is no total guarantee (as there is nothing in life), however, the chances, the probabilities will be greater.

However, as I said at the beginning, for many, many people it will be necessary to work after high school or sometimes even before. Then the question arises whether or not it is possible to work and study at the same time.

Is it possible to work during the day and study at night?

If the time you leave work allows you to arrive at the place of study (college or another technical course), I would say yes, of course it is possible!

Millions and millions of people around the world have already taken this path of studying and working at the same time. It won’t be easy, or rather, it won’t be peaceful like just studying (and just studying sometimes isn’t peaceful either). However, as I mentioned above, the odds of getting better work and pay are greatly increased.

In fact, I think that maintaining hope that the future will be better is fundamental to maintaining motivation during the period of time until the conclusion of the course. For free time will fall precipitously. If we add 8 hours of work plus 4 hours of classes, we will have 12 hours of productive activity. Considering that on the weekends it will be necessary to study for tests and carry out work, we will see that it really is a journey that will require dedication and commitment.

Although sometimes it seems almost impossible, the ideal would be to leave at least one day for complete rest – usually Sunday.

But an important detail: in general, the academic calendar is quite generous with regard to vacations. The most common thing is to have vacations in July and in the months of December, January and February. Because, apart from some specific differences between institutions, there are 4 months of study in the first semester and 4 months of study in the second semester:

1 Semester: March, April, May, June

2 Semester: August, September, October, November

Therefore, despite the efforts made in these months, the rest time on vacation will also be important to restore strength.

The choice of course

If the chosen course is a course that will be useful in the future, there will certainly be more motivation to overcome difficulties. And difficulties will certainly appear here and there. That is why it is so important that the course is chosen calmly and consciously.

Consciously means being fully aware of simple factors:

– What is the course;

– How is the course (curriculum);

– What is the course for (which areas of professional activity that the course allows the person trained);

– And, last but not least, to know if the course is compatible with the personality. This factor leads us to the next topic:

Compatibility between personality and chosen course

In a very synthetic way, a course (technical or college) has two uses:

1) Teaching knowledge

2) Teach a professional activity

For example, after a certain age (perhaps due to the lack of encouragement from school) I began to dislike studying mathematics. Therefore, any course that has mathematics as a fundamental basis will not be compatible with my personality, that is, with what I desire, want, aim for and with my cognitive abilities – as I have no appreciation for mathematics, I end up not having much mastery over it. Is it over there.

And if I choose a course that requires the use of mathematics in everyday life, for example, such as accounting or engineering, I will certainly not be happy in the long run because I will be constantly in contact with what I don’t want to have or want to do.

With this, it is concluded that it is fundamental to evaluate the course, but it is also essential to look inside and see if the contents and professional actions linked to it will be close to what is wanted.

If so, if we are going to want to study and work with what we are going to study, studying at night and working during the day will be just one of the challenges on this journey.

To conclude, I would like to say that the desire to want to study is commendable. To fulfill the dream of completing a course and having more options in the market, it is necessary to evaluate the circumstances in which we are inserted. For some people, it will not be necessary to work, while for others the decision is whether to study or not to study (not working is not a choice).

For the latter, the ideal is to survey all possibilities, especially time and money to invest, in addition to knowing rationally and consciously about the desired course. The path will not be easy, but in view of the possible future reward, the motivation can be to keep constant.
