4 years of longing for Roberto Gómez Bolaños, the eternal Chaves

Roberto Gómez Bolaños, better known as Chespirito, conquered millions of people around the world (and, of course, here in Brazil) with his characters. He left us four years ago and has left a huge hole in the hearts of all his fans. Bolaños always said that people should do what they love, and that it’s never too late to find out what that is. His talent was born in Mexico, crossed borders and made the whole world cry with laughter.

Today the awesome.club brings some information about his personal life and about the best of this Mexican master of comedy.

the beginning of the career

Although Roberto Gómez Bolaños graduated in engineering and worked in a construction company, fate had prepared something different for him. One day, he found an ad in the newspaper that said they needed someone to fill a vacancy at an advertising agency. He decided to give it a try and shortly after, he was doing what he liked most: writing.

This change in his professional career led him to discover that writing was not just a passion, it was a vocation. On television, he started out writing for the shows ‘comics and songs‘ and ‘The studio of Pedro Vargas‘, in 1950. Afterwards, he took his own program to television: “Os Super Gennios da Mesa Quadrada”, with characters such as Professor Girafales and Doctor Chapatin. This program gathered some characters around a square table. They would read spectator letters and respond in a comical and absurd way.

He was born on February 21, 1929, in Mexico City. Director Agustín Delgado started saying ‘Shakespearito’, comparing him to William Shakespeare, mainly because of his great writing talent. Roberto Gómez Bolaños accepted the nickname as high praise. Afterwards, the name changed and became Chespirito. His first performance was at the age of 29. Interestingly, he didn’t want to be an actor. As he realized that people liked how he acted, he decided to write texts as well as interpret them.

The Chaves program premiered on June 20, 1971 and was broadcast for 20 years without interruption. It has been dubbed into over 50 languages ​​and viewed by over 350 million people a week.
In Brazil, aired for the first time in August 1984 and is still shown on SBT. The first time Chespirito played Chaves he was 42 years old.

All the characters he invented start with CH, like Chapolin, Chaves, Chapatin, chamfer and chompiras🇧🇷 He had six children with his first wife, Graciela Fernández. On November 19, 2004 he married Florinda Meza, the owner Florinda.

They offered the opportunity to take Chaves to the movies, but he declined the offer.

The opening music of Chaves was composed by Jean-Jacques Perrey and is based on the Turkish March, by Beethoven.

The name of Chiquinha’s character (La Chilindrina) came about because the freckles resembled the sugar on the Mexican sweet bread, which has the same name.

The Mint of Mexico, in 2013, put the characters of Chaves on nine commemorative coins, in a limited edition. For fanatics, on the Mercado Livre website in Mexico, it is possible to purchase some of these coins. In the state of Durango, Mexico, there is a street named after Roberto Gómez Bolaños.
