The purpose of chlorine is good: it leaves the pool water clean and free of microorganisms that can cause illness. But it can also become enemy number 1 for those who practice water sports such as swimming, hydrogymnastics and synchronized swimming – all because of the acidity and low pH of the product. Once absorbed, chlorine makes strands weak, brittle and dull (the effect is doubled on colored hair).

To avoid sensitized wires, just take some basic precautions before diving into chlorinated water:
1. Do a deep wash with anti-residue shampoo
When done once a week (and no more than that!), the habit removes excess chlorine and other minerals that build up in the wires, without damaging them. “Finish with a good moisturizing mask or leave-in to prevent dryness and protect the hair even more”, teaches dermatologist Natasha Unterstell, from Curitiba (PR).

2. Wash with fresh water before and after diving
“If the hair is previously damp, a smaller amount of chlorine will penetrate the strands”, explains dermatologist Lia Dantas, from Porto Alegre (RS). Rinsing after diving is also mandatory. If you have difficulty finding a shower, bet on the thermal water. “It’s easy to carry in your purse, helps remove chlorine and hydrates just right,” says Natasha Unterstell.

3. Don’t give up the diving cap
The accessory is important to reduce the water contact of the pool with the wires. But, do not abuse! “Prolonged use can also be harmful to the hair because it accumulates sebum and skin debris, which can cause flaking”, warns Lia. Opt for a silicone model, dry well before storing and don’t forget to put talcum powder inside the cap to prolong its useful life.
4. Hydrate is accurate!
Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day is a good start, as hair hydration starts with body hydration. Hair creams are also essential for those exposed to chlorine, of course — once or twice a week, always after contact with the pool.
