4 mistakes we make when choosing the size of our clothes

How often do you make a mistake when choosing your clothes size? This is more common than you might think, especially when it comes to internet shopping. Fortunately, knowing a few rules means you can buy a pair of jeans or a sweater that fits perfectly.

O awesome.club prepared for you some instructions on how to take measurements correctly, what size to choose and what to pay attention to to avoid mistakes.

1. Taking measurements wrongly

Hip circumference. The best way to take hip measurements is by standing with your back in front of a mirror. As to check this measurement you need to place the measuring tape on the most prominent part of the buttocks, the mirror will help to avoid mistakes.
Waist circumference. To measure waist circumference, place the tape at the narrowest part of the abdomen, without sticking it to the body.
Bust circumference. To measure the circumference of the bust, place the tape so that it rests on the most prominent points of the breasts and shoulder blades. On the back, it should be at the highest point of the bust.
neck circumference (often used to determine the size of men’s shirts). Place the tape measure around your neck so that it passes over the seventh cervical vertebra and across the base of your neck, ending at the jugular.

After you’ve taken your measurements, compare your results with the table below and choose the correct size. It is valid, for example, for purchases on American and Chinese websites.

INT — international size

2. We do not pay attention to the manufacturer’s recommendations

When shopping for clothes online, keep in mind that the sizes used by different manufacturers may differ from each other. Almost all sites have their own measurement tables, which indicate parameters related to a particular size, and which should serve as a guide when choosing.

3. When choosing the size, we do not take into account the particularity of the fabric.

So that the garment does not turn out to be unexpectedly large or small after washing, look at what the fabric is made of. Cotton and wool “squeeze” when washed, and items made from woven fabrics or synthetic fibers stretch. Also, be sure to take into account the manufacturer’s recommendations for the care of the piece. Pay attention to the symbols present on the labels.

Which pieces should we buy in a larger size?

Sweaters and wool garments. First, tight-fitting garments protect less against the cold than looser ones. Secondly, it is very likely that, after washing, the woolen fibers will shrink, making the garment smaller. By the way, to avoid shrinkage of clothes after washing, they must be dried in a horizontal position, laid out on dry towels.
T-shirts, shirts, underwear and other cotton garments. After washing, cotton tends to shrink a lot, so you shouldn’t buy tight-fitting garments made from this material. But, if the product contains elastane in its composition, be guided by its usual size.
Shirts and blouses with high collar. When trying on this type of clothing, pay attention to how tightly the collar fits the neck. If there is no gap between the neck and the fabric, then it is better to take a larger model. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will be strangled by the collar after washing.

What pieces to buy in a smaller size?

Point pieces. It doesn’t matter what thread was used to make the stitch fabric: these products are sure to stretch. So, it’s better to buy pieces like this in a smaller size. Otherwise, at the end of the first day of use, the sleeves will already be bigger than necessary.
Jeans. Despite the fact that jeans are made of cotton, the peculiarity of the fabric of the fibers of this fabric is such that the jeans increase in size right after the first use. The exception is jeans that have special elastic fibers in the fabric. This type of jeans practically does not increase in size.
Polyester parts. Clothes made from this synthetic fabric have the particularity of stretching, especially on the underside of the garment, on the sleeves and collars. The problem can be solved if you buy a smaller size.

4. Wrong choice of shoe size

If you need to buy shoes from an online store, measure the length of your feet from heel to toe. Be sure to measure both feet, as most people’s left foot size is different than the right. Choose shoes taking into account the largest measurement.
