20+ “Friends” Side Characters Who Left Their Mark on the Show

You might not even believe it, but it’s been 26 years since the premiere of Friends. Despite this, fans can’t get enough of the production, and TV stations continue to rerun its episodes, which have a guaranteed audience. But it is worth asking the question: what would the series be if it weren’t for the characters who were part of the plot, but in smaller participations than those of the six protagonists? What would have happened without Emily, the target of a mess made by Ross in the middle of the wedding ceremony? Or without Richard, and the influence he had on the relationship between Chandler and Monica?

O awesome.club thought about all this, and decided to prepare a post remembering some of the best secondary characters in friends, taking the opportunity to show how they are today.

1. Jane Sibbett (Carol Willick)

There is no doubt that one of the most remembered roles in the actress’ career was that of Carol, Ross’s first wife (among the many he had!). In the plot, she separates from her husband when she falls in love with Susan (played by Jessica Hecht). She is a recurring character on the show, as she has a son with Ross: little Ben.

In addition to friends, Jane worked on Herman’s Head and Daddy’s Girlfriends, with the Olsen twins, among other productions. His relationship with Jessica has continued as, for example, they have been teaching yoga classes online together.

2. Jessica Hecht (Susan Bunch)

Carol and Susan form one of the great couples in the plot, very dear to fans of friends (even because, if they hadn’t met, maybe Ross would still be married to Carol, making the Ross-Rachel couple practically unviable). Jessica continued her career as an actress, working in films such as Everything Can Go Rightdirected by Woody Allen, and Me, My Brother and Our Girlfriend. She also participated in series such as breaking bad, when he gave life to Gretchen Schwartz. But not everyone was able to recognize her without the characteristic curls she sported in Friends.

3. Cole Sprouse (Ben Geller)

How Ben grew up! For many viewers, he remains that boy who loved to play the “hard” pranks he learned from “Aunt Rachel”, and for whom Ross dresses up as an armadillo to explain the meaning of Hanukkah. Cole has a twin brother named Dylan, and together they starred in Zack & Cody: Twins in Action. Currently, he can be seen in the series riverdaleas the character Jughead Jones.

4. James Michael Tyler (Gunther)

Gunther is the recurring character with the most appearances on the show, not counting the six protagonists. He won the public’s affection above all by nurturing an unrequited love for Rachel. In fact, the feeling was so great that Gunther even buys a cat that Rachel no longer wants and keeps all of Ross’ furniture when he needs to get rid of everything at Emily’s request (she wanted Ross to have nothing left that he already had). had been touched by Rachel!).

James had previously worked in coffee shops, and despite starting out as just another extra, he was chosen for the role because he was the only one who knew how to operate an espresso machine. As for his career as an actor, he participated in a few more TV series, among them episodesproduction starring Matt LeBlanc (actor who played Joey in friends🇧🇷

5. Maggie Wheeler (Janice)

Oh my God! How many times have we laughed with Janice and her catchphrase throughout the entire series? After all, she is by far one of the most charismatic characters in friends🇧🇷 Both his signature phrase and his unmistakable laugh are quirks of the show.

Maggie has participated in several films and several television productions, always in supporting roles. For example, have you watched Cupid operation🇧🇷 In the film, she plays Marva Kulp Jr., one of the camp’s managers, well-remembered for the fencing duel scene and for falling into the trap that Hallie had set for Annie in the bedroom. Furthermore, she is passionate about music, and nowadays she directs a choir in Los Angeles called The Golden Bridge Choir.

6. Mitchell Whitfield (Barry)

Barry is abandoned at the altar by Rachel, as we can see in the first episode of Friends. Undoubtedly, he is an important character in the plot during the first seasons, as he reappears on several occasions; for example when she marries Mindy, a ceremony in which Rachel participates as a bridesmaid, being forced to reunite with the entire family of the man she left. In addition to friends, Mitchell often works on series and movies as a voice actor.

7. Cosimo Fusco (Paolo)

Cosimo played the charming Paolo, an Italian man Rachel meets during a power outage and who easily annoys Ross. In real life, Cosimo is also Italian, and lives in Rome. Unlike his character in the famous series, the actor speaks English well. His last work was in the Spanish series 30 Coinsdirected by Álex de la Iglesia.

8. Larry Hankin (Mr. Heckles)

Mr. Heckles was the grumpy neighbor who lived just below Monica’s apartment, and he loved to complain about the annoying noises made by the protagonists (although they didn’t make any noise).

In addition to being an actor, Larry is a screenwriter, producer, director and singer. acted in breaking bad as Viejo Joe, a role he repeated in the series’ spin-off film. 9. Hank Azaria (David)

Unlike several others, Hank is not as well known for his role in friends, and yes for having voiced several characters of the simpsons, such as Moe Szyslak, Chief Wiggum and Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, among others. And while we love the work he does with his voice, we remember a lot about him as David the scientist and the love that couldn’t happen (and when it did, it was too late) between him and Phoebe.

10. Mike Hagerty (Mr. Treeger)

Michael Gerard Hagerty played Mr. Treeger, the caretaker of the building where Monica, Rachel, Joey and Chandler lived. Perhaps one of the episodes with the most significant participation of the character is the one in which he comes close to evicting the young women after they sublet the property. Faced with the situation, Joey is willing to do anything to dissuade him from the idea… and that’s how he ends up partnering with Mr. Treeger in ballroom dancing. In addition to friends, Mike has made supporting roles in hit series such as Seinfeld🇧🇷 Grey’s Anatomy and glee🇧🇷

11. Tom Selleck (Richard Burke)

Tom is a renowned actor, winner of a Golden Globe and an Emmy, famous for starring in the series Magnum PI🇧🇷 He has acted in so many series and movies that perhaps many people don’t immediately associate him with the character Richard, from friends, whom Monica was in love with. The relationship between the two ends up not working out, as he didn’t want to have children, which went against the young woman’s plans. In any case, it is a very beloved character, which always gives rise to a debate among some fans: there are those who believe that Monica should have stayed with Richard, and not with Chandler. Even so long later, the actor’s mustache is still intact!

12. Steven Eckholdt (Mark Robinson)

How not to remember Mark? It’s because of him that Rachel lands her first job she’s passionate about, at Bloomingdale’s. In addition, it is the pivot of the first breakup between Ross and Rachel, since Ross was very jealous of him. He subsequently reappears in the final season, helping Rachel find a new job. Steven has acted in other shows and movies, but it was as Mark that he gained the most recognition in his career.

13. Tate Donovan (Joshua Bergin)

Rachel did her best to win Joshua over, after meeting him working at Bloomingdale’s. However, the most important thing about the character is that, thanks to him, Emily Waltham and Ross get to know each other, which happens when Rachel asks Ross to take Emily, her boss’s niece, to the opera. So she could date Joshua.

14. Helen Baxendale (Emily Waltham)

Emily presented us with one of the most memorable moments in the entire history of the show. It’s impossible to forget the moment of her wedding to Ross, when the groom gets confused by the names, and instead of saying “Emily”, he says “Rachel”.

Helen is British, as is her character, and is also known for having played Rachel Bradley in cold fee🇧🇷 In recent years, however, she has preferred to stay out of the spotlight, devoting herself entirely to her family.

15. Elle Macpherson (Janine Lecroix)

Fans haven’t seen Joey in love very often during friends, but in one of the few times this has happened, the character’s crush is on Janine, who becomes his roommate when Chandler moves out. Elle is Australian, like her character, she is an internationally renowned supermodel, and she turned 56 last March. She still looks great, doesn’t she?

16. June Gable (Estelle Leonard)

Estelle was the talent agent who handled Joey’s artistic career. Owner of a peculiar look and remembered for giving unprofessional advice, she was a unique and beloved character to this day by fans of Friends.

17. Lauren Tom (Julie)

Just when Rachel realizes how much she likes Ross and decides to try a relationship with him… Julie comes along! And so Rachel’s jealousy starts, especially when the couple announces that she is going to adopt a cat (although she never gets to do so).

Lauren continued her artistic career, specializing mainly in voice acting. For example, in futurama, she provided the voice of the characters Amy and Inez Wong.

18. Jon Favreau (Pete Becker)

We can say that many people have dreamed, at least once in their lives, of having a millionaire boyfriend. And so was Pete, who was Monica’s boyfriend. On their first date, they go to Rome for dinner, and the man even buys a restaurant so that his beloved can work as a chef.

In addition to acting, Jon is a successful producer, who has participated in projects such as the films The Lion King (2019) and The Avengers.

19. Alexandra Holden (Elizabeth Stevens)

Elizabeth was Ross’ girlfriend during the sixth season, being the subject of many conversations between friends because of the age difference that existed between them (not to mention that Elizabeth was Ross’ student). The relationship does not end smoothly, but we still fondly remember how Elizabeth…
