20 Famous Latin American Superhero Comics Heroes and Villains

In recent years, superheroes have become wildly popular, thanks to major comic book companies like Marvel and DC bringing their stories to the big screen. Not only were these franchises successful at the box office, but they also gained thousands of followers and fans in a very short time.

Thanks to these films, many characters that were not so well known worldwide became popular, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Black Panther, among others. Latino representation has been a very important issue and that is why it has become prevalent today. Therefore, in incredible.clublet’s talk about some characters that you may not know are of Latin American origin or Latino descent.

1. Don Diego de la Vega (Zorro)

It’s a great classic for being one of the first superheroes in history; he is The ghost, by Lee Falk. This skilled California swordsman and cunning masked vigilante was created by Johnston McCulley in 1919, and made his debut in the book The Mark of Zorro🇧🇷 Your alter ego is landowner Don Diego de la Vega, a gallant young man who owns an estate in present-day Los Angeles, USA. Zorro was an extremely popular character and became an inspiration for the creation of many heroes, including Batman.

Originally, the story was set in the republican period of Mexico, but given the success of the comic book, the narrative was quickly adapted to film and, consequently, the historical setting changed to the colonial era as we know it today. Among the most iconic adaptations are the Disney series (1957-1959), starring Guy Williams, and the 1994 and 2004 films, with the participation of Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

2. Ban

Perhaps this is one of the most well-known villains in the world. batman🇧🇷 He is a metahuman (that’s what people with powers are called in the DC universe), name unknown, originally from the island of Santa Prisca, an imaginary country in the Caribbean. His first appearance was in 1993, in the comic book The Fall of the Bat and, from then on, became a villain much followed by Batman fans. Among his main characteristics are his wrestling mask (with tubes that connect to his back and the mask itself), his superhuman strength and his brutality, thanks to the influence of the chemical poison venom.

Bane grew up in prison, but still cultivated a love of reading and is multilingual, fluent in Spanish, English, Urdu and Latin, among other languages. With regard to film adaptations, without a doubt, the most recognized is Tom Hardy’s Bane, from the last part of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, Batman the Dark Knight Rises (2012).

3. America Chavez (Miss America)

This is the second person to receive the title of Miss America, the first being Madeline Joyce in 1943. In 2011, this character from the Golden Age of comics was updated as a different superhero from the original: America Chavez, a teenager of Latin descent, created by two women in a reality distant in time and space, called Parallel Utópico.

Among his abilities are flying, teleportation, super strength and superhuman speed, which he obtained by being exposed to the energy of the Utopian Parallel, for much of his life. Unfortunately, this character appears little in film and television. In addition, the series of comics featuring this character with the title America was canceled in 2018.

4. Agustín “Gus” Guerrero and Francisco “Pancho” Guerrero (The Black Cat)

This superhero was created by Richard Domínguez, from the Texan publisher Azteca Productions. To bring this South Texas hero to life, Richard drew inspiration from famous wrestling personalities like El Santo and Batman. Agustín Guerrero has been the original Gato Negro since his first release in 1993. After the Korean War, Agustín managed to survive, thanks to a Japanese warrior who calls himself Gato Negro and who teaches him martial arts.

Upon his return to Texas, Agustín participated in wrestling under the name Gato Negro, and later dedicated himself to fighting crime using the same pseudonym. Years later, his grandson Francisco (Pancho) inherits the responsibility of becoming the current Gato Negro. In 2019, a film adaptation produced by MGM Television with Diego Boneta in the lead role was announced, although the release platform was not specified.

5. Hector Ayala and Family (White Tiger)

White Tiger made its first appearance in 1975 in the comic book The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. Since then he has been one of Spider-Man and Daredevil’s greatest allies. Hector Ayala was the first superhero from Puerto Rico in the history of comics🇧🇷 in addition to being Marvel’s first of Latin origin.

Hector derives his powers from a magical amulet, which gives him agility, combat strength, and superior martial arts skills. He later passes the mantle of the White Tiger on to his family, specifically his sister Ava and his niece Angela del Toro, who become White Tigers. The character only appeared in the series Ultimate Spidermanin which Ava is the bearer of this mantle, although it is very different from the story portrayed in the comics, as in the film it is implied that she is, in fact, Hector’s daughter.

6. Carlos LaMuerto (Black Tarantula)

Like the mantles of the White Tiger and the Phantom, that of the Black Tarantula is passed down from generation to generation, with Argentine Carlos LaMuerto being its current bearer. The Black Tarantula was part of the criminal group The Tentacle (one of Daredevil’s enemies), but later became the leader of his own organization.

He possesses extraordinary strength, heightened senses, martial arts prowess, enormous intelligence, projects lightning from his eyes (much like Cyclops from the X-Men), and also has a regenerative ability similar to that of Deadpool and Wolverine. He first became known in the Spider-Man comics (The Amazing Spider-Man #432) in 1998, and we have yet to see this character’s film or television appearance.

7. Kyle Rayner (Green Lantern)

Although it may not seem like it, one of the Green Lanterns from Earth, Kyle Rayner, has Mexican and Irish ancestry. Kyle debuted in 1994 in the Green Lantern comics and has gone through many changes over the years — from being a replacement for Hal Jordan, to becoming an independent superhero. Soon after, however, he reverted to being a Green Lantern. Like Hal Jordan, the first Green Lantern, Kyle was chosen for his power ring. And like the other characters, Kyle is also part of the Green Lantern Corps.

The power ring grants him special powers, in addition to the ability to fly, since the true source of power is willpower. From there, he can do anything he wants, such as instantly translating into different languages, traveling through space, and creating force fields. For now, he has only appeared in the animated series. DC Superman: The Animated Seriesa (1996-2000) and Justice League (2001-2004).

8. Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle)

As with Captain Marvel’s origins, the Blue Beetle has had three versions by different publishers since its inception in 1939. However, when it passed into DC hands in 1966, an attempt was made to overcome discrepancies between the different versions. For this, in 2006 they updated the character with Jaime Reyes, a teenager from El Paso, Texas (USA).

Likewise, it is established that the beetle amulet is an alien artifact, which gives its bearer armor capable of flying, scanning objects, launching state-of-the-art weapons and generating shields. On television, he appeared in smallville (2001–2011), but is in the animated series Justice League which takes on greater importance. DC plans to make a movie focused on him, which will be part of the DC Extended Universe, or DCEU, in its acronym in English, although there are still no updates on the production of the feature.

9. Maya Lopez (Echo / Ronin)

Although her Latin American origin was not specified, fans believe this theory because of the character’s last name. Despite this, she is a Native American superhero and one of the few deaf characters in comics. Maya is characterized by having a hand-shaped mark on her face and being a born acrobat, a combat specialist, an Olympic athlete and a professional pianist. At first, she was called Echo, when she first met Daredevil (demolisher 9, 1999), later, however, changing his name to Ronin, when he joined the New Avengers in 2005.

She has not had a significant presence in film or television, other than a brief appearance on the series. Ultimate Spider-Man.

10. Francisco “Cisco” Ramon (Vibe)

If you watched the television series The Flash, on Warner Channel, you might recognize him for being part of The Flash/Barry Allen team and for being a specialist mechanical engineer for STAR Labs. 11. Boring Santana (El Diablo)

A member of the “Suicide Squad”, he was played by Jay Hernández in the film Suicide squad (2016). However, he’s not the only one calling himself El Diablo — who first appeared in 1970 on alter ego Lazarus Lane and, later, in 1989 in the role of Rafael Sandoval. And unlike Chato Santana, these early characters were heroes.

Chato Santana is the third version of El Diablo, who finally appears in 2008 in his own comic book. Unlike his previous versions, Chato is a meta-human with the ability pyrotechnics (psychic ability to control fire).

12. Gaucho

He is an Argentine hero, whose name and origin are not known, but he is part of the “Global Guardians” group. Batman influenced this character to fight crime in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Likewise, Gaucho manages to inspire other vigilante heroes to form their own group, the so-called “Super Malon”.

Batman considers him one of his most trusted international vigilantes. Gaucho was seen for the first time in 1955 in Detective Comics: The Batman of All Nationsa comic that featured Batman-inspired heroes around the world.
