12 Films That Took Over 10 Years to Get a Sequel and Fueled Our Anxiety

Creating a sequel to a film is no easy task, especially if the first one was a success, as it needs to live up to the previous edition. Also, scripts and actors’ schedules need to fit together, among other things. Perhaps this is one of the factors that make the continuation of a film so postponed. However, there are some that take much longer than expected and the fans’ hearts can’t take it with so much anxiety and longing.

We, from incredible.clubwe separated 12 films and animations that took more than ten years to have a continuation, leaving fans in the greatest expectation.

1. Finding Nemo and Finding Dory

In 2003, we were introduced to Finding Nemo, which told the story of Marlin, a clown fish, who goes after his son Nemo in the company of Dory, a little fish that easily forgets everything.

The animation was a success among children and adults, winning the Oscar for Best Animation. The film was so good that fans of the story wanted a continuation, but it took 13 years, that is, the children of the time became adults before Finding Dory reached the big screens.

2. Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Resurrections

Matrix marked an entire generation of movie fans, especially because of the special effects, which have always been one of the strengths of all the films in the franchise. The Matrix effect, when Neo dodges bullets and everything freezes, sent viewers into a frenzy, a feeling that hasn’t changed when, 18 years later, Keanus Reeve returned to one of the main roles of his career, deciding once again between the blue pill or red, in Matrix Resurrections.

3. A Prince in New York and A Prince in New York 2

A Prince in New York tells the story of a nobleman from Africa who escapes his country towards the United States in search of true love that doesn’t care about his status. The feature was starring Eddie Murphy in 1988, and can be considered a pioneer, portraying a prosperous Africa. So many years have passed that it didn’t even look like the long one would win a continuation, but Murphy proved the opposite and released the second film in 2021.

4. Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters 2 was released in 1989 and continued the first film in the plot, telling the story of a group that combats paranormal activities. The team composed only of men was quite successful, and in 2016 the film was resumed. This time a group of women wore overalls and went in search of the ghosts, with the participation of Bill Murray, from the original cast.

5. Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3

Launched in 1995, Toy Story was an immediate success at the box office, in addition to having marked the hearts and childhood memories of many people, who continued to follow the saga of their favorite characters in Toy Story 2, released in 1999 and also a phenomenon of box office. The saga of Andy’s favorite toys waited 11 years, until, in 2010, Toy Story 3 was released, leaving a large part of the public with tears in their eyes when showing another phase of the life of Woody, Buzz & co. saying goodbye to friend Andy.

6. Blade Runner — The Android Hunter and Blade Runner 2049

The first Blade Runner was released in 1982. With Harrison Ford in the lead role, the feature, based on the work Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, competed for the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and Visual Effects the following year. More than 30 years later, the plot gained a sequel called Blade Runner 2049, this time starring Ryan Gosling, who was only 2 years old when the first film was released.

The Indiana Jones franchise, starring Harrison Ford, took a while to gain a sequel after 1989, when Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the third film in the saga, debuted. Until then, sequels were released in a short period of time. However, the fourth film took almost 20 years to reach the big screen, in 2008. Ford once again put on the famous Indiana hat and gave life to the character, considered by Empire magazine to be one of the greatest in cinema.

8. Tron — An Electronic Odyssey and Tron — Legacy

Tron — An Electronic Odyssey is a science fiction film by Walt Disney Pictures that premiered in 1982. The plot revolves around Kevin Flynn, played by Jeff Bridges, who works for a corporation, ENCOM, and ends up transported to the virtual world of games. In 2010, the film won a sequel known as Tron – The Legacy: Flynn, now older, has a son and through him we know the new sequel. To explain what happens between the stories of the films, Marvel released two comics that tell everything between the original plot and the continuation.

9. Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Star Wars is a saga that has its original line and many spin-offs, in addition to a different structure between the films, since Episode 4 comes before Episode 1. One of the biggest delays between the features came precisely between Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, which concludes the story of Anakyn Skywalker and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which introduces the First Order and a new villain. The films had a difference of ten years, enough time to make all of us, fans of the saga, anxious.

Jurassic Park III continues the successful franchise of adventure films, this being the first feature in the saga not directed by Steven Spielberg. The continuation, however, took 14 years to reach the cinema screens, now starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard – previously, the film’s protagonist duo were Sam Neill and Téa Leoni.

The first Incredibles movie was released in 2004 and secured two Oscars for Pixar (Best Animated Feature and Best Sound Editing). There was an indication of an eventual sequel, which got fans excited. However, this took a while: it was only in 2018 that the story gained a sequel, telling more about the adventures of the Pêra family.
