20 Animated Movies That Aren’t Disney But Also Stole Our Hearts

When we hear about animated films, Disney immediately comes to mind. But there are other studios that have brought great and enjoyable stories to the big screen using 2D, 3D animation and the stop motion technique.

1🇧🇷 the brave mouse (1982)

Based on a work by Robert C. O’Brien, the film tells the story of Mrs. Brisby, a mouse who lives in the countryside but travels in search of help for her sick son. Her life takes a turn when she discovers a secret society of super-intelligent rats that have escaped from a laboratory. And she has, with them, a deeper bond than she could have imagined.

It was the first of the films directed by Don Bluth, a famous animation technician who was part of the staff of Disney Studios.

Charlie is a German shepherd who, when he dies, goes confidently to dog heaven. He believes it will be easy to get into the place, but finds out that it is not. The guardians forbid him to enter, because he had not done a good deed in life. So Charlie must return to Earth on a mission to demonstrate that he deserves to enter Heaven. During his journey, he meets an orphan girl who shows him that the true reward in life is friendship. In its premiere, the film competed with The Little Mermaid, from Disney. Without planning, the two get involved in an incident and gradually discover that, contrary to what they were told, they can be great friends. The story is based on a series of children’s books of the same name, written and illustrated by Gabrielle Vincent, and was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Animated Film.

20. Shaun the Sheep: The Movie (2015)

After the success of the television series Shaun the Ram, the story hit theaters. This time, the adventures of the sheep Shaun and his friends take place in the city, after the main character goes in search of his owner. In their attempt to find him, he and the other sheep try not to fall into Animal Control’s hands and return home with the farmer. The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Animated Film.
