16 Masterpieces They Decided to Reshoot (And Shouldn’t Have)

In the 20th century, Hollywood filmmakers began to shoot remakes of old European and American films. Thanks to this, the world often discovers masterpieces of foreign cinema, which only true moviegoers knew before. But the decision to film a new version is not always a good idea. For example, “Psycho”, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, is one of the best films in the history of cinema, and the 1998 production disappointed viewers.

O awesome.club will show in this post famous movies that have an excellent original version, mandatory to watch.

Anthony Zimmer — The Hunt, 2005 / The Tourist, 2010

The original version of this film was shot in France and the main role was played by the unforgettable Sophie Marceau. It received very positive reviews from viewers and professional critics alike, in part due to a good performance by the artists. However, the rating in the IMDb movie ranking is only 6.5 (from 0 to 10).

The remake, shot in the United States, flopped at the box office, despite an all-star cast (it starred Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp) and noisy publicity, although the IMDb rating was “tolerant” at 6 (from 0 to 10). So, for fans of good cinema, we recommend the French production.

Das Experiment, 2001 / Detention, 2010

The original German version was released in 2001 and has become a classic of good cinema, having received a 7.7 rating on IMDb. It deals with the famous experiment at Stanford Prison, when a group of volunteers was divided into “prisoners” and “guards”.

The remake was not so successful (6.4 on IMDb): despite the good selection of actors, neither the public nor critics liked it. Among the most common criticisms are the improbability and artificiality of many events, as well as the characters without charisma.

Solaris, 1972 / Solaris, 2002

The film “Solaris” first appeared on the screens in 1972 and was shot by Soviet director Andrei Tarkovsky. It was a film adaptation of the novel by Stanislaw Lem, who was disappointed in the film. However, it received the Grand Prix at Cannes and went down in the history of world cinema with a rating of 8.1.

In the new version, filmed in 2002, there is little of the original. Stanislau Lem didn’t like it either, as the producers gave the highest priority to the love story that trumps everything else. The result is 6.2.

Those who saw the original movie or read the book didn’t like the remake either. However, the film deserves attention. But we still recommend reading the book.

Le Jouet, 1976 / The Toy, 1982

The French film “Le Jouet”, starring Pierre Richard, is about a boy whose wealthy parents decide to give him a new “toy”: a living person. Throughout the film, viewers see how the relationship with the new “toy” turns into a true friendship for the child and changes it. The film received 7.5 points on IMDb.

The remake is from 1982, in the United States, transforming the drama into a pure comedy. Now the child who owns the “toy” is not just a boy deprived of attention, but a truly spoiled and even cruel egoist. Probably, that’s why you can’t believe his friendship with the “toy” or the abrupt character changes. This is confirmed by the result: 5.8.

The Visitors — They Weren’t Born Yesterday, 1993 / The Time Travelers, 2000

This comedy was released for the first time in 1993 (with Jean Reno in the lead) and received a score of 7. The film is about a knight who arrived in the 20th century straight from the Middle Ages with his servant. Now he needs to get used to the completely new world and find a way to return home, where his girlfriend is waiting for him.

In 2000, a remake starring the same Reno was shot, but in a Hollywood version. In it, the knight not only moved in time, but found himself in the United States. Unfortunately, the remake was much worse than the original (5.8 on IMDb). It was criticized for its primitive humor and ridiculous inconsistencies, such as the Frenchman’s castle located in the United States.

Rindo à Toa, 2009 / Lola, 2012

The original French production made director Lisa Azuelos famous despite a low rating (6.3 on IMDb). After a few years, the film was shot again in Hollywood, with the same story, and did not please the viewers. As a result, the 2012 version grossed only half its budget at the box office and only scored a 4.4 on IMDb.

Conan the Barbarian, 1982 / Conan the Barbarian, 2011

The 1982 film scored a 6.9 on IMDb. The main role fell to the famous Arnold Schwarzenegger, who perfectly conveyed the image of a barbarian: brute, rude and a little wild. The plot is also commendable: it is a story of heroism and courage, seasoned with pure great love.

The new version was not as well received by the public, although Jason Momoa’s characterization is excellent for this role. The film is criticized for the banal plot, the abundance of special effects and characters without charisma. The result is 5.2.

Old Boy, 2003 / Oldboy — Days of Vengeance, 2013

“Old Boy”, in its original version, was a Japanese manga filmed in Korea. It was this film that made director Pak Chan Uku famous all over the world and it got a high rating on IMDb: 8.4.

The American version, shot by Spike Lee, was too liberal with regard to the plot and significantly lost in the emotionality of the Korean film. The result is only 5.8. So we recommend Korean production.

Vampires of Souls, 1956 / Invaders, 2007

The idea of \u200b\u200bthe film “Vampires de Almas” was so good that it was filmed three times in the 20th century, in 1956, 1978 and 1993. You can choose any of these works, depending on which cinematographic period you prefer. For example, the 1956 film’s IMDb rating is 7.8.

But the 2007 version lost a lot to its predecessors (5.9). Firstly, the main plot is uncovered from the very first minutes, telling how the alien infection had penetrated. Secondly, the plot is a cliché: the search for a treatment with a happy ending. Admirers of the original productions of the story could not forgive such banality, so this version was not a blockbuster.

Challenge from Beyond, 1963 / The Cursed House, 1999

The 1963 film based on the novel of the same name kept viewers in suspense with only the signs of what was happening. It’s one of those classic movies that scares you with a whisper. The rating is 7.6.

The 1999 remake failed to achieve the same effect as its predecessor: the actors’ tension and performance are replaced by special effects, but the result is depressing. The rating is only 4.9.

The Straw Man, 1973 / The Sacrifice, 2006

The original of the film is considered a classic of world cinema, mandatory to watch. It has it all: perfect work from the actors, a bit of humor and intrigue that lasts until the end. The film’s rating on IMDb is 7.6.

The 2006 remake has none of that, and has become an amateur production with Nicolas Cage’s unconvincing performance. As a result: 3.7

Psycho, 1960 / Psycho, 1998

“Psycho” from 1998 is not just a remake. This film was literally copied from the original, but it still failed. The actors’ work was the main object of criticism: the role of the psychopath was played by Vince Vaughn, who looked very funny and unconvincing in his role. Anne Heche also failed to repeat Janet Lee’s performance. The score is 4.6 on IMDb.

Therefore, we recommend that you see the original version of Hitchcock and enjoy every scene. Furthermore, the rating on IMDb confirms: 8.5

Wings of Desire, 1987 / City of Angels, 1998

The film “Wings of Desire” has rightly become a classic of world cinema (8.1 on IMDb). It is not just a film, but a film of reflection: about life and death, about love and hate.

The re-edit of the film turned into a cheap, emotionally oversaturated melodrama, which even the star cast cannot save. In this work there are also thoughts about death and love, but they look childish and too naive. Still, the film’s rating is 6.7.

The Eye — The Inheritance, 2002 / The Evil Eye, 2008

The original Asian version is about a girl who, after a corneal transplant, sees something beyond our world. By the time the American remake was released, there were already three parts of the franchise, and they were all successful. Rating on IMDb — 6.7.

The American version did not impress viewers or critics, although the plot completely repeated the original. This production earned Jessica Alba a nomination for the “Golden Raspberry” awards and also received devastating reviews. The result was 5.4.

By Unusual Destiny, 1974 / Unusual Destiny, 2002

The Italian original is remembered by everyone who saw it. This isn’t just a love story, it’s a real clash between two worlds. IMDb Movie Ranking Rating: 7.6.

In 2002, Guy Ritchie made a remake of the film with his then-wife Madonna as the lead. The film not only failed at the box office, not having raised a third of the money spent, but almost cost the director his career. The result was only 3.6.

Mirror, 2003 / Mirrors of Fear, 2008

The original was filmed in 2003 in South Korea. It’s not just a horror movie, but a complete detective story with the moral and punishment of the main character (in the final part). The rating was 6.5 on IMDb.

The American remake, although successful, became an ordinary bloodbath without any special or moral significance. Even the unexpected ending does not explain anything, it just confuses viewers. Still, the film achieved a score of 6.2.
