1. LEGO

The company is one of the largest and most influential in the world, making billions of dollars annually, surpassing even Mattel (which produces cartoons for television, movies and dolls like Barbie). LEGO’s influence is such that some users have kept sets of valuable bricks for years, like the man in the photo, who kept the “set 333” box for 53 years.

2. Barbie

The doll has been a sales success since its launch in 1959. The manufacturer has announced on several occasions that it sells three Barbies per second. Today there are movies, series and countless models of the doll, which marked and continues to mark the childhood of millions of girls.

3. Rubik’s Cube (Rubik’s Cube)

The toy was created by Hungarian professor Ernő Rubik in 1974 and has sold around 350 million units since it was launched. 4. furby

Furby is a doll that captivated generations in the late 90s. In the first year of commercialization alone, almost 27 million copies were sold. 5. Polly Pocket

6. My Little Pony

The My Little Pony (“Meu Pequeno Pônei”, in Portuguese and sold in Brazil at the time as “Meu Querido Pônei”) is a Hasbro brand toy, consisting of a line of colorful ponies, with long manes and other distinctive details. Since 1983 and until today, the toy has been modified four times. Thanks to the television series featuring the characters (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), in 2010, sales gained an additional boost, accounting for millions of dollars.

7. Tamagotchi

The friendly Japanese virtual pet was released in 1996. It is a small electronic device, in the shape of an egg, and with buttons that allow you to see and manipulate the needs of a “live” creature. The toy was a great success in 1997 and 1998 and is still part of the affective memory of most children of that time.

8. Nintendo

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is the second console of the famous Japanese brand, launched in 1983 in the Asian country and then being sold in other countries — Brazil, including, where it “arrived” a few years later. And you, do you miss him?

9. GameBoy

10. Cabbage dolls

Cabbage dolls, also known as pimpolho dolls, were produced between 1983 and 1988. Their main characteristics were their light body, large head and originality — each of them had a very peculiar characteristic of hair and eye color. The toy was such a success that the manufacturer’s revenue from its sales reached 1 billion dollars — more than 5 billion reais. They were very popular at the time and were re-released in Mexico and Spain between 2006 and 2008. They are now collectors’ items.

11. Transformers

Transformers have been popular for decades. The toy line, created by the manufacturer Hasbro, turned into movies, games, magazines and a multitude of products and the famous cars that turn into robots are a huge success to this day. There are two groups of robots, the Autobots and the Decepticons, from the planet Cybertron.

12. Hula hoop

Probably one of the oldest and most traditional toys in history. Invented in Egypt 3,000 years ago and also found in ancient Greece, its name in English is “Hula Hoop”. The “Hula” is a reference to the Hawaiian dance “hula”, which has a very characteristic movement of the hips and is reminiscent of hula hoops. “hoop” means “hoop” in English. The toy emerged, as we know it (and sold commercially) in 1957, launched by the American company Wham-O and made of hard plastic. While not exactly an invention, the “Hula Hoop” brand was patented. In the first year of commercialization, almost 100 million units were sold.

13. G.I. Joe

14. Mister Potato Head

The classic potato-shaped children’s toy allows for different “configurations” with numerous shapes of mouths, eyes, ears and noses. 15. Tazos

16. Bratz dolls

Bratz dolls were released in 2001, becoming a trend for girls of the then generation. At the time, they were called “anti-Barbie dolls” because they wore flashy clothes and bright makeup. The fact is that these dolls broke a kind of pattern that existed until then for female toys and that was based, above all, on Barbie’s style.

17. View-Master

The View-Master was a device used to view discs with stereoscopic images. It was a fashionable toy in the 1960s, although it wasn’t intended for children — the main idea was for people to use the device to view pictures of tourist attractions. With the apparatus, it was possible to see two simultaneous images (one in each eye), generating a sensation of depth when looked at together with a kind of binoculars. An “ancestor” of current virtual reality devices.

18. Hot Wheels

A true classic. The car brand created by Mattel (the same maker of Barbie) was introduced to the market in 1968. The vehicles have impressive designs and finishes, similar to real cars. They have been very popular since their launch, including a series of licensed products, such as backpacks, for example.
