16 Little-Known Films That Went Under the Eye of Critics But Won the Hearts of Many Viewers

The film industry annually produces so many films that it is simply impossible to keep up with all the new releases, let alone watch them to the end. So sometimes we’re willing to give up picking the next blockbuster in order to spend an evening seeing for the 10th time a classic favorite we’ve known pretty much from start to finish. However, there are countless wonderful and really well-made productions that we haven’t even heard of that are worth seeing.

We, from awesome.clubwe’ve found some films from years gone by worthy of being at the top of our lists of favorite cinematic works.

The Mirror Has Two Faces

In that 1996 film Barbra Streisand plays the role of a middle-aged professor of English literature, Rose Morgan. She lives with her overbearing mother and doesn’t want to get married, but believes it’s good to at least have an understanding partner. Once the protagonist’s sister finds an advertisement in the newspaper for a mathematics teacher: “I’m looking for a woman with a doctorate, over 35 years old, appearance is not important”, and decides to answer him as if she were Rose. That same night, the man asks Rose out.

The film is based on the plot of the 1958 French drama Le Miroir à deux faces.

100 Steps from a Dream

The events of the film take place in the south of France and deal with the rivalry of two restaurants that are located opposite each other. One is owned by an Indian family, and the other, starred in the famous Michelin guide, belongs to a Frenchwoman, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Hassan, the chef at the Indian restaurant, and Marguerite, the sous chef at the French restaurant, fall in love. And Madame Mallory, who appreciated the professionalism of the Indian chef, invites him to work in her restaurant against the wishes of the boy’s family.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Richard C. Morais.

Austenland

This romantic comedy is a real treat for fans of Jane Austen adaptations. According to the plot, the protagonist, in love with the stories of the famous writer, spends all her savings on a trip to the specialized resort called Austenland. There, she, like all the other guests, receives a pseudonym and a costume from the 19th century. But most attractive of all is the guaranteed romance with the actor portraying the character of such literary works.

The production is based on the eponymous book by Shannon Hale and produced by Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight saga.

Letters to Juliet

Viewers fall in love with this romantic comedy drama with Amanda Seyfried in the lead role. Together with the protagonist, we travel to Verona, Italy, where the story of Romeo and Juliet takes place.

While Sophie’s fiance is busy with work, she walks through the city and, in the courtyard of the so-called Juliet’s house, she finds a wall on which girls from all over the world hang love letters in search of advice from the beloved character of Juliet. Mighty Joe

Jill (Charlize Theron) grew up in Africa with a baby gorilla named Joe. When Joe becomes a mature animal, he and Jill must move to an animal sanctuary in the United States for safety reasons. But just as the friends begin to settle down to a quiet life, the hunter responsible for Joe’s mother’s death appears. Pretending to be an animal advocate, he seeks to convince Jill to send his friend back into the wild.

Maximum Ferocity

The new owner of a large zoo decides to attract the public with an unusual advertisement: the zoo will only contain dangerous predatory animals. Personnel are ordered to get rid of all docile animals. However, most employees are opposed to such a decision and are looking for the opportunity to keep the zoo in its original form. The director even rescues some animals in his own apartment.

The film is an unintended sequel to the comedy A Fish Called Wanda and features four actors from the previous cast: John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin.

The Miracle Came from Space

A touching story about the residents of a small building in downtown New York that is about to be demolished. The building’s managers, an elderly couple, don’t want to leave the house where they raised their children and spent most of their lives, but now they can only hope for a miracle to save it. Once, when waking up in the middle of the night, they see flying saucers: strange creatures appear to help them.

Originally the story was to be just one episode of the Amazing Stories series. But the producer, Steven Spielberg, liked the idea so much that he decided to adapt it into a feature film.

Another Woman’s Life

The French comedy tells the story of a young woman named Marie (Juliette Binoche). One day she meets a handsome man named Paul, but when she wakes up the next day, she discovers that 15 years have passed. Now she is a successful professional, married to Paul and has a son. But Marie doesn’t remember anything, and her marriage to the man she met just yesterday seems to be on the verge of divorce.

The film is based on the book by French novelist Frédérique Deghelt.

Unforgettable moment

This dramatic comedy tells the story of Mac McIntyre, an oil company executive who goes to a small Scottish town to negotiate the purchase of all the land for the construction of a refinery. Although the locals are willing to accept the generous reward and leave their estates, where farming is becoming increasingly difficult, Mac himself, who has fallen in love with the little seaside town, begins to doubt his task.

Originally, the film’s director, Bill Forsyth, wanted the film to star Michael Douglas.

Walking in the Clouds

The 1995 romantic drama stars Keanu Reeves, an actor beloved by millions of viewers. According to the plot, his character, Paul, meets a beautiful young expectant mother, Victoria, during a business trip. She returns home fearing her overbearing father’s reaction. When the main character finds out that the girl’s boyfriend and father of her future child left her, he offers to pretend to be her husband.

Madness in Los Angeles

“Weatherman” Harris K. Telemacher, who lives in Los Angeles, has problems both at work and in his personal life. Desperate to find magic and meaning in life, he meets a journalist one day and immediately falls in love with her. That same night, an electronic traffic sign starts “talking” to Harris, giving him advice about his personal life.

Steve Martin not only played the lead role, but also wrote the screenplay for the film. And one of the most notable characters in the film was played by young Sarah Jessica Parker. The actress admits that the production helped her career.

In this romantic comedy, Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney play divorced parents of two school-age children. They meet when their kids are late for a school trip. So the characters are forced to spend the whole day together taking care of the children. However, gradually mutual resentment and irritation are replaced by attraction.

The curious thing is that the title of the film originates from the song One Fine Day by The Chiffons, which is played in the film.

The famous French actress Brigitte Bardot starred in the romantic comedy The Bear and the Doll. His colleague on the set was Jean-Pierre Cassel (the father of star Vincent Cassel). In the story, a wealthy and temperamental woman seeks to awaken the love interest of a cold and ironic musician. To achieve her goal, she goes to the farm where the man lives with his son, his nieces and a big dog.

The protagonist could be played by Catherine Deneuve, and the protagonist by Alain Delon or Jean-Paul Belmondo.
