13 Things You Shouldn’t Tolerate at Work

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, a person changes jobs every 4 years and 2 months, on average. Data from Brazil are probably a little different, but it is true that we change jobs many times throughout our lives. Many times these changes are due to offers of better jobs, changes in cities and even discomfort in living with colleagues. It is this situation that we will deal with in this post. From those extreme situations that tell us: it’s time to get away from that job!

O awesome.club decided to find out and share with you the behaviors and work situations that we should never tolerate.

1. When bureaucracy exceeds rational limits

Imagine a situation in which virtually every sneeze, lunch break or other purely natural action you perform at work must be coordinated by means of a report. In such a company, taking a vacation is akin to passing a difficult test. What if, at the end of the day, you have to write a report or a minute by minute about everything you did during the journey? It sounds horrible, but in many companies it works like this.

Forbes magazine calls “slow” companies that work like this, not being ready for professional growth. There is no reason for the company to remain among thousands of approvals and reports. Efforts to change the situation, or at least to reduce the number of bureaucratic obstacles, are worthwhile.

2. Little opening to discuss salaries

If your initiative to touch on financial matters is censured, be alert. And if they still try to shame you for defending their financial interests, then building a career in the long term will be a problem there.

Discussing the salary with superiors and asking for an increase for objective reasons: inflation, an increase in the number of obligations and demands, is something absolutely normal.

3. Personal expenses

4. Guilty without guilt

You go to work on Monday morning, open your email and see a rude message that says you should have calculated a budget on Friday. But the budget assignment never existed, not Friday, not ever – or you were with a colleague and it was suddenly passed to you. This type of situation is reason to think about the conduct of your superiors.

If the boss begins to accuse him of not having completed a task that was never assigned or the tasks he is given are even incomprehensible, then it’s time to talk seriously with his superiors.

5. Working with ghosts

Ghosting is a relatively new term that is commonly used to identify a silent withdrawal by one of the partners in a relationship. The psychological damage of this phenomenon in relationships is already being studied, but similar behavior by a colleague or superior at work also causes considerable damage.

If your requests are consistently ignored and your questions are not answered, you need to call management for a serious discussion.

6. The promised promotion or raise never came

Eternal promises of ascension, salary increase, a better work environment, training or any other “tomorrow” whose execution is promised almost daily… all of this was not fulfilled. Situations like these make anyone dissatisfied and compromise employee performance. Career consultant Roy Cohen, who works with financial firms on Wall Street, New York, says that this type of leader tends to shoot himself in the foot, as employees do not forget about broken promises.

It is possible and necessary to make additional efforts if the promise of coordination is backed by an exact date, having a real foundation. For example, the promise of a salary increase must have an exact amount (10% increase, let’s say) and a clear deadline – one month after the delivery of the project.

7. Leeches disguised as friends

Occasionally, the appearance of friendly relations at work encourages exploitation. When the boss is practically your best friend or the colleague in the next cubicle is a wonderful person, it’s hard to deny a small request: finish work and stay an hour longer and arrive earlier, among other requests. Little by little everything becomes a rule, and you, without realizing it, could be working hours and hours more for free.

Friendship at work is wonderful, but if it influences the work process, it is worth considering whether this really is a friendship.

8. “It’s the company’s culture…”

Just by hearing the phrase in the title, we should be suspicious. Of course, we can arrive at work a little earlier or stay a little longer. But, usually, there are formulations of this type that hide the implicit rules of the company: do not argue with the boss, do not have your own opinion, do not take vacations or sick leave for more than a certain number of days in a row. It is the so-called ‘company culture’, revealed in the small details of behavior.

If the work team already has a set of non-explicit rules that contradict CLT rules or other labor rules or simple common sense, then it is important to consider whether it is worth staying in such a work team.

9. Emotional blackmail

Very friendly relations with a boss or colleagues can lead to the recurrence of phrases such as “You are abandoning us”, “This is a stab in my back”, “but how could you?”. So-called emotional pressure methods force us to abandon our plans, goals or even principles. And they appear precisely when you defend your opinion or decision.

Forbes experts say that employees willing to sacrifice their values are less successful than those who maintain their personalities and attitudes. Therefore, remaining in an environment where you cannot be who you are is unfavorable for both you and your career.

10. We are going through a difficult period

The constant references to a difficult period, temporal difficulties and requests “that you put yourself in our shoes” show a system already in place where you will always endure calamitous situations, without being spared. Many times a financial crisis, difficulties imposed by the government (such as excessive taxes or labor regulations) serve as an excuse for unscrupulous companies to pay employees poorly or subject their collaborators to the worst working conditions. In that case, the extra obligations assigned to you may become permanent, salary increases are out of the question, and change is always on the horizon, with no deadline to come.

Crises have an expiration date. If the financial crisis is permanent, be wary.

11. It’s for your own good

If the Human Resources department asked you to come back before the holidays; if only the bosses have extraordinary perks and the ‘pawns’, almost nothing or if you need thousands of justifications to be able to go out and go to the doctor, be wary

12. Constant changing priorities

Urgent tasks in an instant become non-urgent, the workday has no plan, all the time management tells you to leave what you are doing to focus on something else… are these situations familiar to you? If you are asked to do something and 5 minutes later to do something else, with the aggravation that the result of the work should have been finished yesterday, it will not be possible for this to be a healthy work environment. It will be eternal stress.

A competent leader always has a work plan to be followed; a shift in priorities, especially when it’s urgent, is the exception, not the rule. If your boss constantly changes priorities, then it’s time to talk to him.

13. Sexism

Sexism in all its manifestations. It could be sexual harassment at work, rude jokes, insinuations about women’s intellectual disability or even lower wages compared to their male colleagues. In Brazil, both moral and sexual harassment are crimes, but even so, many victims remain silent for fear of future complications.

Any manifestation of discrimination based on gender causes a stressful situation in the team and negatively affects the women’s self-esteem. One must react to this type of attack, even if it is veiled.

Work is an important part of our lives, and it should generate well-being. At least some well being. Regrettably, this is not always the case. Have you ever been through some of these situations so common? Can count? Share with us!
