13 Things you might not know about the telenovela “Rebelde” and the phenomenon it has become

In the mid-2000s, a phenomenon emerged in Mexico that would enter the Book of Records as the band with the most awards in just four years: there were no less than 180 honors. The number gives just one dimension of the commotion caused by the RBD group, derived from the telenovela Rebel🇧🇷 which acted as a springboard for the careers of the actors in the cast.

On account of this, the awesome.club decided to share with you some curiosities about the soap opera responsible for the creation of the band RBD, whose trajectory was from 2004 to 2008.

1. The success of the RBD group surpassed that of the telenovela itself

Even before the telenovela premiered, there was already the idea of ​​creating a musical group that would serve to promote the characters of the television production itself. And that’s how RBD came about, formed by Anahí, Dulce María, Maite Perroni, Alfonso Herrera, Christopher Uckermann and Christian Chávez.

The success obtained by the group was so great that, in the third season of Rebel, the chapters gained extra time, lasting an hour and a half each. The components still toured nationally and internationally after the end of the soap opera.

2. It is an adaptation of an Argentine soap opera

the argentinian series Rebel Way inspired the soap opera Rebelde to be created. The original story debuted in Argentina in 2002, and, two years later, the adaptation reached Mexican TVs. Rebel Way also led to the formation of a band, called route which was successful in several countries. Unlike the Mexican RBD, the group had only four members.

The phenomenon gained such proportions that the group launched its own board game, in which the person who made the best excuses in extraordinary situations won.

In May 2007, Mattel launched a special edition Barbie with the characters Mía, Roberta and Lupita, making the actresses who played them the first Mexicans to win versions of the most famous doll in the world.

Furthermore, in partnership with Walmart, RBD launched a product line that included clothing, accessories, watches and personal care items, among others.

The characters also crossed over from the small screen to the paper when comic book production company ¡Ka-Boom! Estudio released a comic book based on the novel, featuring a graphic style similar to that of Japanese manga. However, due to some complications, only two issues were released.

8. The Elite Way School is actually a residential club

The setting where the young rebels lived most of their stories, the Elite Way School, is located near Mexico City, in Huixquilucan, in the state of Mexico. In reality, the space is a residential club called Bosque Real Country Club. In the soap opera, it is possible to see several installations of the place, such as sports courts, swimming pool, restaurant, etc.

9. In real life, couples were the opposite

Although the couples in the soap opera are formed by Mía (Anahí) and Miguel (Poncho Herrera), and Roberta (Dulce María) and Diego (Christopher Uckermann), off-screen the couples were the opposite. Dulce María and Poncho Herrera had started to bond when they worked together on the telenovela Class 406 and even got into a relationship during the recording of Rebel🇧🇷 but the love story came to an end when the production was still showing.

On the other hand, Anahí and Christopher Uckermann also dated during a stage of Rebel. However, they were together for only eight months.

10. They stepped on important stages around the world

RBD is considered the biggest pop phenomenon in the history of Mexico, but the group’s success was not restricted to its native country. The band became one of the most successful in the Hispanic music market, selling over 50 million records worldwide.

They performed on grandiose stages, such as the Maracanã stadium in Brazil, the Coliseum in Los Angeles, Madison Square Garden in New York and the Vicente Calderón in Madrid. In all, the group visited 116 cities in over 23 countries, including Romania, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and Slovenia.

11. They created the Sálvame Foundation

Brazil was a very important country for RBD in view of the large number of fans won in the country. In February 2006, an incident occurred when a security fence gave way during an event held with the group in São Paulo, causing tragic consequences. After the fact, the creation of the so-called Sálvame Foundation was announced, aimed at helping street children. One of the entity’s initiatives was to promote a free show in Brazil.

All the emotion associated with RBD’s songs deserved a date on the calendar. In 2007, October 4 was made official as World RBD Day. The day was chosen because it represented the beginning of Rebel: the first chapter of the plot was broadcast on October 4, 2004.

13. Netflix prepares a new version of the story

Cris Morena, the creator of the original story, confirmed the sale of rights to Netflix, the company that will be in charge of producing a new adaptation of the plot. Apparently, the production will initially have 20 episodes, but it is quite possible that the public will not see the characters of the Mexican version again. Rebel🇧🇷 since the new series must be more faithful to the Argentinean version, Rebel Way.

Although the cast has not yet been confirmed, some names have already been aired as possible protagonists. Among them are Sergio Mayer Mori (son of actress Bárbara Mori) and Andrea Chaparro (daughter of actor Omar Chaparro).
