13 mistakes we make when storing our things that lead to their deterioration

Many people store products based on their own comfort: if it’s more convenient to leave an item in the kitchen, it obviously won’t be stored in the pantry. We are already used to a certain order, so we simply have no doubt where one thing or another should go. However, sometimes we don’t even realize that, in reality, we end up damaging our favorite pieces.

We, from awesome.club, we find out which items we tend to store incorrectly and how to avoid such mistakes. At the bonuswe will tell you how to store nuts, so that they remain fresh and healthy as long as possible.

1. Keep perfume in the bathroom

Perfumes do not tolerate sudden changes in temperature or light. It’s best to avoid leaving them on the vanity or in the bathroom, as these options negatively impact the scent. To conserve eau de cologne, a place in the refrigerator is best suited. with stable and low temperature, for example at the door, while for perfumes, a dark and dry place.

β€œI used to keep my perfume in the fridge. Then I moved it to the closet, where the sun doesn’t get in. However, sometimes in the summer I put it back in the fridge. This way, using your favorite fragrance is very refreshing,” wrote one Pikabu user.

By the way, there is another drawback of storing perfumes in the bathroom: due to excessive humidity, condensation accumulates on the glass, making the bottle slippery and easy to slip out of your hands and break.

2. Leave your toothbrush near the sink

Most people keep their toothbrush next to the sink, but this is actually one of the worst places to keep it. Due to high humidity, the bacteria that remain on the bristles of a toothbrush begin to multiply quicklyπŸ‡§πŸ‡· It is necessary to rinse and dry it well after each use, as well as keep it away from the sink and toilet, for example, in the bedroom. After all, it’s not too difficult to take the brush to the bathroom for daily brushing.

3. Store makeup brushes in the bathroom

Many women like to apply makeup in the bathroom, therefore they try to keep all the necessary accessories in it. However, it’s best to store your brushes in a cool, dry place where they don’t come into contact with each other. Your bristles tend to get dirty quickly and bacteria easily multiply in them, especially in humid and hot environmentsπŸ‡§πŸ‡· By the way, you need to wash your brushes regularly, otherwise they can cause inflammation and other skin problems.

β€œI remembered something I haven’t done in a long time… I had forgotten that this brush is white!”

4. Store knives in a common drawer

Knives kept in the same drawer as other items will dull and deteriorate. This problem can be solved by using different knife organizers. The most aesthetically attractive are the magnetic strips fixed on the wallπŸ‡§πŸ‡· Another option is the horizontal or vertical support where the knives are protected from contact with each other.

5. Hanging bags by the handles

It is not advisable to hang bags by the handles: they can crack and, over time, the shape of your favorite bag will distort, especially if it has something heavy in it. It is better to leave accessories on a shelf in your wardrobe, this way they will retain their original look for a longer time.

6. Leave a mop on the bathroom floor

Moisture in the bathroom air can cause mold to grow in the mop fibers and an unpleasant smell in the room itself, really hard to get rid ofπŸ‡§πŸ‡· It is necessary to dry the mop, preferably by exposing it to the sun, or, if this is not possible, leaving it suspended.

7. Hang sweaters and cardigans on hangers

Traditional hangers are totally unsuitable for knitted garments, as these quickly stretch at the shoulders and lose their shapeπŸ‡§πŸ‡· The best place to store sweaters and cardigans is on a shelf. However, if you want to keep them on the hanger, you can do the following: fold your sweater in half and hang it on the hanger so the hook is between the sleeves and the main part of the garment, and pin the sleeves under the bottom crossbar .

8. Store spices on open shelves

Spices of different colors look very attractive in glass jars. However, to preserve their flavor and aroma for as long as possible, you need to keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and also away from the stove, as the heat will make them age fasterπŸ‡§πŸ‡· Of course, spices are better kept in a glass jar than a plastic one, but in any case, the container must remain hermetically sealed.

9. Keep silver cutlery together with common ones

Silver needs special care. To maintain its shine, do not store silverware with others, it is better always in a separate drawerπŸ‡§πŸ‡· Between the cutlery there must be a space, or cloth to prevent them from scratching each other.

10. Keep documents in a common folder

It is better to store important documents in a cool and dry place so that the sheets do not deteriorate. A plastic box with a lid will do just fine. It is important that folders are always organized and available in case of an emergency.

It’s a good idea protect documents from water and fireπŸ‡§πŸ‡· For this, there are special pastes that withstand exposure to high temperatures.

11. Keep photos in a shoebox

Many people don’t know where to put thousands of old photos and keep them in cardboard boxes. However, it is worth remembering that these boxes are permeable and let in moisture, which can damage the photosmake them yellow or faded.

The solution is to use airtight packaging, for example a plastic box with a lid, and keep the photos away from sources of heat and light. The example in the photo on the right is excellent, just take the boxes out of the window and store them in a dark place.

You can opt for a modern way: scan the photos, assign a tag to each one, indicate the place and time the photo was taken, and that way you can easily classify them on your device. Of course, original photos have their value, but over time they deteriorate, while digital ones do not fade. Β© Robotozavr / Pikabu

12. Keep clothes on hangers and open shelves

When choosing such furniture for the room, you need to remember to keep your things in perfect order, and not everyone is ready to spend their time on this. Another argument against hangers and open shelves is the vulnerability to dust of the pieces stored on them. Numerous feedbacks point out that clothes stored in this way become a real β€œmagnet” for dust, hair and dirtπŸ‡§πŸ‡·

For rarely used seasonal clothes, it is worth purchasing plastic covers, as the shoulders of such items are literally covered with dust. And an open hanger isn’t going to look as cool as we thought it would.

13. Store towels in the bathroom

Due to the humidity in the bathroom, it is very difficult to prevent the appearance of mold in this room. Therefore, leaving bath towels in it is not a good idea. The steam will make them wet., which will stimulate the reproduction of bacteria. So try to reserve them a shelf in the closet in another room.

Avoid leaving used towels in the bathroom, it is better to dry them on the clothesline or in the heated towel rail.

Bonus: How to Store Nuts

Many people keep shelled walnuts in a plastic bag, or simply in an open container. This is a mistake, because at room temperature, the natural oils contained in them start to spoil and give food a bitter tasteπŸ‡§πŸ‡· It’s best to place the nuts in a clean, dry container with a lid, or in a zip-lock bag, and store them in the refrigerator.
