12 “Grey’s Anatomy” Characters and How They Physically Changed Between First and Last Appearances on the Series

The series Grey’s Anatomy debuted in 2005 as a mid-season replacement for another sitcom and quickly turned into a big hit. More than 15 years have passed since the first episode and today this phenomenon has 17 seasons and 369 episodes. Meredith Grey, the young woman who entered the hospital as a resident, grew into an experienced woman and underwent major physical and psychological transformations. But the rest of the cast has also changed a lot since 2005.

O awesome.club wanted to see how the passage of time affected the characters of Grey’s Anatomy and prepared a list with photos that compare their first and last appearance in the series.

Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo) is the protagonist of the series and therefore participated in all seasons. In the first episode, the young doctor had a lot of doubts and was just starting to work at the hospital. Little by little, she got to know her colleagues and bosses and established herself as a great surgeon.

In season 17, Meredith ends up being infected by a virus and as her health deteriorates she begins to have visions in which she is reunited with several mythical characters from the series, among them Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and George (T.R. Knight).

George O’Malley’s (T.R. Knight) story is perhaps the most dramatic in the series. He appears in the first episode as one of the five residents who enter the hospital. In the season 5 finale, he saves a woman’s life, has an accident and is unrecognizable.

George reappears in season 17 in one of Meredith’s visions.

Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) appears for the first time in the first episode and the residents decide to call her “Nazi”, for her strong, dry and direct personality. She is responsible for the hospital’s residents. One of her last appearances comes in season 17, when she confesses to Meredith (who is unconscious) how hard it is for her to watch her mother struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is another character that remains throughout the series. His first appearance takes place in the first episode of season 1, as Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace Hospital. In season 17, he reappears recovering from a health issue that started the previous season.

Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) is one of the first characters to appear in season 1. In one of the first scenes of the story created by Shonda Rhimes, we can see Derek waking up at the house of Meredith, with whom he spent the night. A little later, she finds out that he is one of the surgeons at the hospital, therefore her boss. In season 11, the character dies in an accident, but reappears in season 17, in one of Meredith’s visions.

Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) also appears in the first episode of the series, he is one of the residents who flirts with Meredith. In season 16, the actor announced that he would be leaving the series. His last physical appearance was in the eighth episode, when he returns to his house to take care of his mother, who is sick.

Audiences meet Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) for the first time in season 5, when he arrives at Seattle Grace Hospital after working as a medic in the army. One of the most impressive scenes is when the character performs a tracheotomy with a pen. In season 17, Owen reappears and gives Teddy an opportunity to tell the truth about his romance with Koracick.

Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) also appears for the first time in Season 1. From the beginning, she shows herself to be a dedicated and competitive doctor. Her last appearance is in the season 10 finale, when she leaves Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital and moves to Switzerland.

However, Kevin McKidd (the actor who plays Owen Hunt) confirmed that Cristina was by Meredith’s side during Derek’s funeral in season 11, but she wasn’t the actress, she was a stunt double.

When Meredith Gray and the other residents start working at Seattle Grace Hospital, Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) is the head of cardiology. His last appearance was in season 3 when he leaves Cristina at the altar. But he reappears in season 10 and asks Cristina to take over her position as head of the Swiss hospital.

Callie Torres (Sara Ramírez) first appears in Season 2 and helps George with his dislocated shoulder. Callie works in orthopedic surgery and little by little falls in love with George. The character’s last appearance was at the end of season 12, when she decides to move to New York.

Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) enters the story in season 5. This new doctor has some disagreements with Miranda Bailey and later marries Callie. Her last appearance was in season 14, when she also moves to New York.

Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) is part of the residents who enter the hospital in the first episode of season 1. The character paid for medical school by working as a model. The actress’ last appearance was in season 6, when she is fired by Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.).
