12 Creative ways that can help get rid of bed bugs

Bed bugs are smart enough to hide in small crevices to protect themselves from daylight. For these and other reasons, they are insects that cannot and should not be underestimated. Fortunately, nature and science offer us many ways to control and eliminate bed bugs in our homes. You just need to know what to do.

O awesome.club loves finding simple ways to keep our homes safe and healthy. Precisely for this reason, it wants to protect you, the reader, against these blood-feeding parasites.

1. Sweep away insects with steam

According to the Department of Entomology at the Polytechnic Institute and Virginia State University in the US, releasing steam in the home can help scare away bed bugs. The steam causes the insects to come out of hiding. At sufficiently high temperatures, steam can even be fatal to them.

2. Direct a hair dryer at the insects

As we mentioned earlier, heat is capable of killing bed bugs. But if the steam does not solve the problem, locate the eggs of the insect and direct the hot air emitted by the hairdryer to them. Bed bugs do not move their eggs, so the technique allows them to slowly kill them, without triggering allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to other treatments.

3. Apply double-sided adhesive tape

4. Dry your clothes at high temperatures

Even if your clothes are new, wash and dry them at high temperatures as soon as possible. The technique allows you to kill bed bugs hidden in clothes. Do this periodically with all your pieces.

5. Spread some silica gel

You know those little packets of silica gel that come in shoes, clothes and even some foods? Do not throw them away, as they can scare away bed bugs. According to research, silica gel is able to absorb lipids from the cuticle of insects, causing them to dehydrate and die.

6. Keep your clothes in plastic bags

If you do your laundry in the laundry room, be sure to use sealed plastic bags. The technique prevents bed bugs from hiding among the fabrics.

7. Prepare a dry ice trap

According to research from Rutgers University in the US, dry ice can kill bed bugs by releasing carbon dioxide, which attracts the insects. You can make a trap by filling a pitcher with dry ice and rubbing some talcum powder around the container. Thus, the pets will be trapped.

8. Prepare a spray with vinegar

Vinegar contains an acetic acid that affects the insect’s nervous system, so you can put the product in a spray bottle to kill bed bugs. Simply apply the vinegar directly to the insects. In addition, it is worth passing white vinegar in infested areas and in those places where the bug can easily enter.

9. Mix chili pepper, oregano and ginger

10. Use essential oils to make an insecticide

According to a study by the Entomological Society of America, two oil-based products, a bed bug insecticide and the EcoRaider, killed 90% of bed bugs in a test. They are natural products that contain oils such as geraniol, rosemary, mint, cinnamon, clove and lemongrass oil. If you want to make a homemade solution, just mix lavender oil, peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle.

11. Apply putty in your home

Since bed bugs tend to infest the home by getting into cracks and small spaces in windows, doors, and even walls, you can make their lives difficult. Check your home for such spaces and fill them with putty.

12. Use black walnut tea

Black walnut tea can fight bed bugs thanks to a substance called juglone. Spread used bags of the drink in places where the insects and their eggs are. Another idea is to put the tea in a spray bottle and apply it at home, as we recommend doing with vinegar.
