We answer 12 curious questions that steal your nights sleep

People are naturally curious and often ask a lot of questions. And have you noticed that our brain is especially curious before going to sleep? It is precisely at this moment that questions arise whose answers do not make the slightest difference, but which keep ‘hammering’ in our heads. For example: which of these beings are taller: hobbits or dwarfs? Or: why are flamingos pink? Or again: where did that pair of socks we put in the washing machine go?

O awesome.club decided to make the task easier for your brain and answer not very serious, but quite curious questions.

1. Why do cats go crazy after defecating?

If you have a cat, you’ve certainly noticed that after he poops, he goes crazy and starts running around the house. If you’ve ever wondered why he does this, here are two theories from scientists.

In nature, cats choose places away from their homes to relieve themselves. After defecating, they start running to outwit your enemies🇧🇷

According to another, more popular version, after having a bowel movement, the cat feels physically and mentally relieved. At the same time, serotonin, the happiness hormone, is released. Yes, it’s true: after an “event” like that, your cat is in a good mood and therefore runs with joy.

2. Why do people cough when they clean their ears with cotton swabs?

This is called the “Arnold reflex”, named after the scientist who first described it. What happens is that the vagus nerve is located in the skin of the external auditory canal. It is he who “informs” the brain that it is necessary to cough, because irritation of the nerve fibers activates the cough reflex.

3. Why when we exhale while saying “uuuu” the air comes out cold, but when we do the same thing, only saying “aa-um-a” the air comes out hot?

When we want the soup to cool down faster, we generally blow it as if to say: “uuu”. But when we want to warm up our palms, we blow them making a sound like: “aaa”. And it’s not by chance.

Here is the most likely explanation: the temperature inside the body is above that of the environment. So when we exhale, the air is warmed by body temperature. That’s what happens when we blow, saying “aaa”.

But when the lips are parted (“uuu”), there is pressure in the mouth and the air ends up leaving the tight lips at a greater speed, which leads to an adiabatic (rapid) expansion of the air and, consequently, to the drop of your temperature.

4. Why do cats like to get into bags?

Cats are predators by nature. But they are small predators that need to be always on the alert so as not to fall into the clutches of even larger predators. Additionally, cats need shelter to set up their ambushes and monitor their prey. Therefore, following the call of nature, mustachioed pets love all kinds of shelters, and bags are perfect for that.

In addition, from the cat’s point of view, a bag has another indisputable advantage: its ability to produce a crunching sound that reminds the cat of the noise of a mouse. It’s what attracts you.

In addition, cats living in apartments are bored in a limited space, where nothing happens. And the little bag you brought from the store is full of new scents that your pet is so attracted to.

5. Why do royals look so ugly in old portraits?

If we look at portraits of members of European royal families from the 16th century, it is unlikely that any of them will strike us as attractive. The explanation for this peculiarity is found in the intrafamilial marriages practiced by the nobility of the past. Incest often threatens offspring with serious pathologies and, of course, does not contribute to beauty.

Let’s see an example. The portrait above shows Charles II “the Bewitched”, the last representative of the Habsburg dynasty in Spain. Perhaps he was the most prominent victim of such marriages. As a representative of the family’s fifth generation, he only had 10 ancestors (a normal person has 32).

Carlos suffered from many illnesses, in particular, epilepsy. As a child, he learned to walk and talk late. Due to his illnesses, he died at the age of 38 without leaving any heirs.

6. Which beings are taller: hobbits or dwarves?

Hobbits are short creatures, about half the height of a person, approximately. 90 cm (if it is half the height of a tall person).

The height of the dwarves is 140 cm to 150 cm🇧🇷 Therefore, dwarves are taller than hobbits.

7. Why do soccer players show their soles to the referee?

When a football player replaces another on the field, some referees inspect the soles of their boots. However, they are not checking whether the athlete has stepped in dog droppings or anything like that. This is done to ensure the safety of your shoes and that of other players. Cleat cleats should not be too sharp so that the athlete does not harm his rivals.

The studs can become sharper if the player walks with their cleats on concrete. Of course, high-level athletes are unlikely to do so, and shoe checking is nothing more than a formality. But in lower level tournaments, this ritual is very important.

8. Why are flamingos pink?

In general, the plumage color of these birds ranges from white to red. Flamingo chicks have grayish plumage. Birds turn pink due to the food they consume. Or rather, due to the substance it contains, the so-called carotenoids. It is they who give color, for example, to carrots.

9. Why did swallows disappear?

Specialists from nature protection societies confirm a sad fact: swallows really disappear from some large cities. They cannot hunt above buildings as they often do in the fields. And in urban areas, fields have given way to parks with some types of grass that don’t provide food for birds. Sure, these areas look pretty, but they lack the tiny insects that swallows eat. These birds cannot, like the swift, leave the cities and travel 70 km to hunt. Thus, in most large cities, swallows can only be found in more distant areas.

10. Why do meteorologists “fool” us?

Believe it or not, meteorologists do this unintentionally. Furthermore, it is not because of supposed incompetence.

There are about 10,000 weather stations in the world. It seems like a lot, but meteorologists are convinced: they are not enough. The fact is that the location of many stations is inadequate: most are in places inhabited by people. And cyclones and other atmospheric phenomena often originate in the most deserted corners of the Earth. Meteorologists believe that, in order to obtain an accurate forecast, the observation network should have a maximum distance of 30 km between stations.

There is another version. Finnish researchers have suggested that accurate weather forecasting is hampered by proliferation of Wi-Fi networks. At the end of the day, we have to choose between enjoying the convenience of wireless Internet or always carrying an umbrella in our purse.

11. Why are grandmothers so eager to feed their grandchildren?

We’ve all heard the jokes about grandchildren barely moving because of the amount of food they eat at their grandmothers’ house. The explanation for grandmothers’ “banquets” is the following: as retirees, most grandmothers have a lot of free time. Also, they know how to cook and always want the best for their grandchildren.

Sadly, some old world grandmothers survived the famine caused by war and misery. That experience remained imprinted in their minds forever. And happiness for them is when the whole family is at home and eats well. Therefore, you should not be angry with your grandmother for wanting to feed you at all costs.

Some grandmothers may have their own reasons. For example, this one:

“I think the vast majority of people have always been surprised by our dear grandmothers’ desire to feed us so that not a crumb is left on the table. Today, my grandmother told the truth almost by accident! If you don’t eat everything I’ve prepared, we’ll have bad weather.”

12. Where are the missing socks?

This, without a doubt, is the most important mystery of humanity. On any shelf in the closet you can find a dozen “loose” socks.

Socks can be “hidden” between the washing machine drum and its carcass. They can also get caught in the appliance hatch rubber. When the washing machine is fully loaded, heavy parts can squeeze small items. As a result, they get into the plumbing when draining water or clog the drain hose, which threatens to flood apartments.

A user of a social network shared a story about this subject:

“Yesterday I was sorting out the wardrobe with my husband’s clothes and I found a lot of mismatched socks. In the past I used to find few and I was surprised that the number of single pieces varies from time to time. I was sure the socks wouldn’t disappear in the washing step as I washed them in pairs. So this morning I decided to ask my husband about the algorithm for these ‘single’ parts to come up. He perked up and said to me: ‘Look, I put the socks on and one of them sometimes has a hole. So I throw it in the trash, but I regret having to throw the second one away because it’s usually still like new and clean too. So I put them in their place, and as you buy more socks, over time they’ll find their match, always the same way: the same kind of wear-resistant socks. But not all of them manage to find their new ‘better half’, so some of them still live in solitude”.
