12 Actors Who Ditched “Grey’s Anatomy” and Why They Did

many fans of Grey’s Anatomy were in tears with the departure of characters who left the series as the story unfolded. Some goodbyes are remembered (and suffered) to this day, such as Derek Shepherd’s or Alex Karev’s. But the truth is that, in all cases, there were reasons that made the actors leave the cast of the successful series, still on show today.

In this post, the awesome.club reveals what happened for the interpreters of certain characters to decide to leave Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital.

1. George O’Malley (T.R. Knight)

George won the sympathy of many viewers thanks to his sincerity, his platonic crush on Meredith and several other virtues, but none of that was enough. His character began to lose space in the plot, and instead of questioning Shonda Rhimes (executive producer and creator of Grey’s Anatomy) in this regard, the actor decided to leave the show.

2. Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl)

Izzie made us laugh with her lines, made us proud when she defended her work as a model and also showed that people can change (judging by how she started and ended her relationship with Alex Karev). Her character battled cancer and was caught between life and death, but survived and excelled in season 16.

Katherine removed her name from the list of possible Emmy winners because she felt that her character did not deserve it. It strained her relationship with Shonda Rhimes. After some time, she apologized. Will Izzie return to the plot at some point?

3. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh)

4. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington)

Preston Burke’s departure was surrounded by much controversy. Not for the character itself, but for what happened behind the camera. In fiction, Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Burke got along poorly initially and exchanged barbs as they both aspired to the leadership post. However, the actors also argued backstage. Isaiah used politically incorrect terms to refer to some of the colleagues, involving T. R. Knight. He would later publicly apologize, but it was too late.

5. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane)

Another character fondly remembered by fans. From his first appearance, problematic and amusing, he gave that impression of being “the villain who is easy to identify with”. Supposedly, his departure was the result of a mutual agreement between Eric and Shonda Rhimes. If, on the one hand, the actor felt that he was ready to face new challenges, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy concluded that it was time to bring Mark Sloan’s story to a close.

Eric was recently seen starring in the series The Last Ship, from TNT as Commander Tom Chandler. The actor admitted, some time later, that he loved being part of Grey’s Anatomy, but that I could not pass up an opportunity like that of The Last Ship pass.

6. Lexie Gray (Chyler Leigh)

7. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh)

It’s impossible not to feel affection for Addison, despite her past. The reason behind his departure from Grey’s Anatomy it was simple: the character deserved her own attraction. And so it happened. Separated from everything that staying in Seattle meant, she arrives in California to start her life over, as the public can see in Private Practiceone of the series spin off in Grey’s Anatomy🇧🇷

8. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez)

After more than ten years in the cast of Grey’s Anatomy, Sara decided to take a well-deserved vacation. Shonda Rhimes praised the actress and said that he would miss her, but that she would always have a captive place (and that makes many fans believe in a reappearance of the character in the future of the series).

9. April Kepner and Arizona Robbins (Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw)

According to an article on the specialized website deadline, both actresses’ contracts were not renewed because Ellen Pompeo’s salary would be higher, and so the producers were in need of that money. However, Krista Vernoff, producer and screenwriter of Grey’s Anatomywent public for deny the statement, clarifying that the departure of the two characters was a decision totally linked to the creation, since the series was in constant reinvention, needing changes to be able to be extended without losing the interest of the spectators.

10. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey)

There is no doubt that it was the most difficult and devastating exit for fans of the series, as the character was something of a hero and had a tragic end. Patrick revealed, in an interview with the British vehicle iNews, why did you decide to leave Grey’s Anatomy: “Ten years was too long to be on any television show. It’s very difficult to keep the story interesting, especially when 25 episodes are produced a year. For me, it was time to leave. It’s good to continue with my career and face new challenges.” The character’s tragic ending eliminated any possibility of his return to the series (although many fans would certainly like the idea of seeing him again with Meredith). However, when it comes to Shonda Rhimes, it’s impossible to be sure, as she always has a trick up her sleeve.

He wrote a letter to Meredith explaining the reasons (which broke fans’ hearts asunder, while everyone was glad he didn’t have a tragic fate like many of the other characters). Justin explained that his artistic career needed new directions. So, with his departure, only three of the main actors from the original cast of Grey’s Anatomy: Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber).
