11 Quirks About Our Favorite ’90s Shows

Certain series have a captive place in our hearts. Especially those from the 90s and 2000s, which made the whole family sit down in front of the TV to follow the adventures of their favorite characters. Some of these productions marked certain phases of our lives, being fondly remembered. 1. Carlton was inspired by Courteney Cox for her dance in Um Maluco no Pedaço

Actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who brought Carlton to life in the acclaimed series, revealed that, in fact, the famous dance repeated by him and Will Smith in several episodes was inspired by none other than one of the protagonists of Friends. Alfonso practically repeated the same movements made by Courteney Cox in the music video for “Dancing in the Dark”, by Bruce Springsteen.

The actor also added an extra touch by copying the way Eddie Murphy moved in a monologue in which he stated that “white people can’t dance”. Thus, Ribeiro created a perfect combination that would be remembered by many people over the years.

2. Originally, Rachel’s first boyfriend was supposed to play Ross

Today, it’s even hard to imagine other actors in the roles of the most famous group of friends on television. However, Mitchell Whitfield, who played Barry, the groom left at the altar by Rachel, was almost left with the mission to bring Ross to life. The role was practically in his lap when David Schwimmer decided to audition at the last minute and ended up being chosen. Without a doubt, it was a huge missed opportunity for Mitchell. But to tell you the truth, we can’t think of anyone better than Schwimmer to embody Ross Geller.

3. The character of Agent Scully in The X-Files was inspired by The Silence of the Lambs

One of the most original series of the 90s was, without a doubt, The X-Files, both for its plot and for the chemistry present between agents Mulder and Scully. What few know, however, is that the character Dana Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, was inspired by Clarice Starling, Jodie Foster’s role in The Silence of the Lambs. However, according to producer Larry Mollin, the last straw was the fact that Shannen decided to cut her hair without telling anyone, which destroyed the continuity of an episode that was being recorded.

Despite her work on Barrados no Baile having been abruptly ended, the actress would return to work with producer Aaron Spelling on Charmed — Young Witches.

5. Fran Fine’s wonderful wedding dress in The Nanny cost the equivalent of over R$ 60 thousand

There’s no questioning the fact that Fran Fine, played by Fran Drescher, became a ’90s fashion icon thanks to her flashy outfits. However, there is one costume in particular to which the professionals involved were more dedicated. We are talking about the wonderful wedding dress worn by the nanny during her dreamed wedding with Mr. Sheffield.

The dress cost around $12,000 (R$62,000), with a 1.20 meter train and a 4.5 meter veil. The actress said that the piece was found in a very exclusive bridal shop, and that the ceremony was important to the point of causing her the feeling of organizing her own wedding in real life.

6. Ryan Reynolds was about to join the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

It would have been interesting to see the protagonist of Deadpool in the role of Xander, the best friend of TV’s most famous vampire slayer. The creators of the program, however, revealed that, initially, the older brother of the girl would be the protagonist, while she would only have the role of youngest sister. It was one of the executive producers of the NBC network who suggested turning Blossom into the main character. And nobody denies that the job turned out to be a golden opportunity for the young Mayim Bialik.

9. Frasier’s set was one of the most expensive at the time

To decorate the apartment of the successful therapist Frasier Cane, the designers spent around half a million dollars, the equivalent today of more than R$ 2.5 million. The well-known character’s sofa alone was a replica of Coco Chanel, having cost 20,000 dollars. And the setting was further complemented by other antique furniture. The investment was certainly worth it, as the series was very well received in its 11 seasons.

10. Leonardo DiCaprio Was Rejected By David Hasselhoff And Didn’t Make It Into SOS Malibu

Many big names, such as Jason Momoa, Carmen Electra and even Sofia Vergara, started their successful career in SOS Malibu. Leonardo DiCaprio also auditioned for the role of Hobie, the son of Lieutenant Mitch Buchannon. However, he was turned down by actor David Hasselhoff himself, for whom Leo was too big for the role. In the end, the producers settled on Jeremy Jackson, who practically grew up on camera while the series was being shot.

11. The idea for Seinfeld came after a conversation at the supermarket

The idea for the successful 90’s program came about after a conversation between friends at the supermarket. Comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David were in line doing their quirky pranks when they realized that they had never seen a similar format on TV, and that this could work. And they were absolutely right!
