11 Facts From the World of Cinema That Only the Most Avid Fans Know

Many people cannot conceive of their life without films, but only true fans know the details of creating cinema masterpieces, episodes from the lives of actors, features of work in the film industry and other big and small secrets

For example, the first 3D movie was filmed in 1922, Chewbacca’s prototype from Star Wars was a dog named Indiana, and there’s a movie we’ll never see since it’s scheduled to premiere in the year 2115.

O awesome.club shares another series of interesting facts about the movie world that you probably didn’t even suspect.

Counterfeit money used in movies must not completely imitate real money.

There are different rules on this matter in different countries. For example, in the United States counterfeit banknotes must have the image printed on one side and the other blank. The money size of movies is also different: they must be at least 25% smaller than the actual tickets or the opposite 50% larger.

The need to implement these rules was demonstrated in 2001 during the filming of Rush Hour 2, in Las Vegas. Some employees and people in the crowd tried to spend the dollars that looked like the real ones they had collected during the casino explosion scene.

In every scene of the movie Fight Club there’s a cup of coffee from starbucks

Each movie usually has its own “Easter Eggs”, that is, secrets, hidden messages, jokes and other details that were inserted by the creators. In Fight Clubthese Easter Eggs were the Starbucks coffee cups, which can be seen in each of the scenes of this drama.

And it’s not just a product placement (advertisement hidden in the film), but also a suggestion that the ubiquitous Starbucks was opening its establishments on almost every corner. The filmmakers had nothing against the coffee giant, they just wanted to dig a little deeper into the successful company. And Starbucks representatives studied the script and had nothing against this type of use of their brand.

Most American films shot before 1929 have been lost. Among them was the world’s first made in 3D

According to the Film Foundation (an organization founded by Martin Scorsese that is dedicated to preserving and showing classic and restored films), 90% of American films shot before 1929 are irretrievably lost. Among these works is the first 3D movie in history, called The Power of Love. In the photo you see one of his shots. It’s just what was saved.

The film was made in 1922, with the installation of two cameras. It was presented using two projectors, and viewers wore special red and green glasses to watch it. It had two endings: one happy and one tragic, but unfortunately, both versions are considered lost.

There is a version that the Academy Award was named Oscar because for actress Bette Davis the butt of the figurine looked like that of her first husband

The Oscar received its official name in 1939, before which winners received an unnamed statuette. But who and why chose this name precisely? There are several versions on the subject. According to the first, the name was chosen in honor of one of the husbands of actress Bette Davis (pictured). According to her memoirs, it was she who named the award, as the back of the statue resembled the analogous body part of her first husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson.

According to another version, the statue got its name after the executive secretary of the Academy, Margaret Herrick, took the statue in her hands, looked at it carefully and exclaimed: “But this is my uncle Oscar!”. This person, Oscar Pierce, really existed, although he was not Margaret’s uncle, but her second cousin.

The third version says that the name “Oscar” was given by columnist Sidney Skolsky, who was tired of writing about the nameless statue and decided to name it. Although not everyone considers this version to be reliable, as the name “Oscar” was already mentioned by Walt Disney, who received this award in 1934, about a year before Skolsky’s article was published.

In the film industry there is a concept called
“The Stupid Plot”

The term “idiot plot” came to cinema from literary criticism. It denotes a narrative that continues basically because its main characters are idiots, and without that it would be too brief. There’s also the “second-order idiotic plot,” which, according to the originator of this concept, science fiction writer Damon Knight, is a story that’s only possible because literally every one of its characters is a first-class idiot.

The American Association for the Protection of Animals opposed the film. A dream of freedom because of a worm

A somewhat unexpected fact, given that only one animal (more precisely, a bird) was used in the film: old Brooks’ crow. In the film there is a scene where the bird is fed a worm found during lunch on the main character’s plate.

The American Association for the Protection of Animals insisted that only a worm that died a natural death should be fed to crows. Despite the fact that in nature birds usually don’t wait for insects to die, they managed to find a dead larva and filmed the scene with it.

By the way, some people are even worried about the fate of creatures that are already extinct. For example, some believe that in Jurassic Park — Dinosaur ParkSteven Spielberg filmed real dinosaurs and that the director supposedly “killed” several of them.

Judy Garland, aged 16, was forced to starve and smoke so she wouldn’t gain weight during the filming of The Wizard of Oz and other productions

A truly monstrous story, but unfortunately too common for Hollywood’s golden age. Movie studios literally exploited their actors and controlled them in everything from their diet to their personal lives. Judy Garland was a healthy weight, but the study insisted that she lose weight, so she only ate one bowl of soup and one bowl of salad a day.

They also forced her to smoke to lose her appetite. According to Garland’s memoirs, she and other young artists were high on amphetamines to keep from feeling drowsy. This was done so that they could shoot as many films as possible. After the recordings, Judy recalled, they were taken to a studio hospital, where the actors were already receiving other drugs, barbiturates, to “rest” before the new work.

All this, of course, did not have the best effect on the health and appearance of the actress and, most likely, was one of the reasons that led to her untimely death.

George Lucas’s dog was named Indiana.
Became the prototype of Chewbacca

This is what George Lucas himself said about his pet: “When I was working on the film, I had an Alaskan malamute. The sweetest dog that was always by my side when I wrote the script. And when he was driving, he was sitting in the front seat. The malamute is a very large dog, weighing about 60 kg, standing taller than a man and having very long hair. He was always by my side, and that gave me the idea to create a companion for Han Solo who looked like a big, shaggy dog. A dog, but with a human mind.”

And, of course, it’s not hard to guess that Lucas took the name of his favorite pet after another character played by Harrison Ford himself: Indiana Jones.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who played Sherlock Holmes in the series, is distantly related to the author of the books about that character: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Who would have thought that the character invented by Arthur Conan Doyle would be played by one of his relatives (even if it is very distant). That’s exactly what happened: “Sherlock” Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Arthur have a common ancestor: John Gaunt, the first Duke of Lancaster and the third surviving son of the King of England, Edward III, who lived in the 14th century. John Gaunt is the 15th generation great-grandfather of Conan Doyle and 17th of Cumberbatch.

But that’s not all: Benedict Cumberbatch also played Richard III, who, according to genealogists at the University of Leicester in England, is also his distant relative. The royal blood doesn’t stop there. According to them, the actor is still distantly related to Queen Elizabeth II, through his other ancestors.

Despite the widespread belief that Marilyn Monroe was a plus-size woman, not all skinny people fit into her outfit.

The view that Marilyn was fat is nothing more than a myth, probably caused by the fact that most people know the actress exclusively from the movie. The Hotter the Better🇧🇷 Monroe participated in this film while she was pregnant (sadly, none of her pregnancies came to term) and therefore weighed a little more than the usual 53 kg, with a height of 1.67 m.

According to the records kept by the costume designers, Monroe had the following measurements: bust: 91 cm; waist: 60cm; hip: 86 cm. Let’s agree that these measures cannot be classified as large. This is also confirmed by the actress’s clothes that have survived to this day and which are sold at auctions and exhibited in museums. In addition, in the 1950s, in the US there was another equivalence of sizes, so that the then 12 (used by Monroe) corresponds to the current 6 (S-Small / P-Small).

Robert Rodríguez and John Malkovich made a movie that won’t be shown until 2115

“The film you will never see”: this is the work’s slogan. Sad but true: few of those still alive will be able to watch this sci-fi movie. But why 100 years? It turns out that the film was created in collaboration with the brand of cognac Louis XIII, which belongs to the French house Rémy Martin. A whole century is required for this drink to age, which in this case expires on November 18, 2115. And that was the day chosen for the production’s premiere.

Details of the film are kept in the strictest confidence, but 3 trailers have been released: “Retro”, “Nature” and “Future”. They do not contain frames from the movie, but only represent 3 imaginary types from the future. Thousands of guests from around the world, including Malkovich and Rodriguez, received invitations to the premiere, made of metal, which can be passed down to their descendants.
