10 unexpected and interesting facts for coffee fans

If your mornings only start with a good cup of coffee, then you are one of the billions of coffee fans that exist on the Planet. Every day, more than 2.25 billion cups are consumed in the world, which confirms, once again, the general love for this drink. But there are many notable facts about coffee.

We Brazilians tend to believe that we know everything about this drink. But what do you actually know about coffee?

In this post, the awesome.club shares interesting facts about one of the most popular drinks of our time.

1. There is no strong coffee

In fact, there is no such strong feature. After all, it is impossible to objectively assess this ‘strength’. During different tastings, the coffee flavor is evaluated according to a certain variety of parameters, as shown in the table above.

2. The right time for coffee

If your goal is to wake up and feel more energetic, choose the right time to drink coffee. You can choose according to the level of cortisol in the body. Most people have a high level between 8:00 am and 9:00 am. The next peak of this hormone occurs between 12h and 13h and the last one, between 17h30 and 18h30.

Choose the best time, which is just after your natural attention level drops. After the last peak, it is better not to drink coffee if you want to sleep peacefully at night.

3. Drug interaction

Researchers in Germany and elsewhere have found that combination of pain relievers with caffeine significantly potentiates the effects of remedies. They compared the effect of combining acetaminophen and aspirin with caffeine; between paracetamol and aspirin, separately; and they also tested acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine or placebo separately. The conclusion: coffee potentiates both the effect of paracetamol and aspirin — acetylsalicylic acid.

4. How long do the effects of caffeine last?

If you drink a cup of coffee at 9:00 am, at 1:00 pm there will still be about 100 mg of coffee in your system. But if you drink it after 3 pm, this substance can remain until the evening and this can affect your sleep.

5. How long do coffee characteristics last after being ground?

If you grind the coffee bean, do not leave it to prepare the drink to drink afterwards and try to use it within the first 15 minutes, because its active substances remain during this period. After that time, the coffee loses its unique aroma, it becomes less tasty and, moreover, it will be impossible to distinguish the different types of coffee according to their aroma.

6. How coffee is obtained

To get 1 kg of coffee, you need to collect beans from two bushes. The coffee tree takes approximately three years to produce.

7. Packages with valve

Some specialty coffees have aroma valves in the package; by pressing it, you can identify the aroma and distinguish the fresh product from that which is no longer suitable for consumption. But that is not its main function. The presence of the valve indicates that the coffee was packaged immediately after roasting and grinding. Coffee, even after harvesting, emits a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) after roasting and, without the valve, the packaging would simply explode. Therefore, valves are also known as degassing valves.

8. Coffee improves sports performance

9. Originally, coffee was eaten

As coffee is extracted from a fruit, it is not surprising that it was not immediately used as a beverage. Tribes of Africa, mainly from Ethiopia, birthplace of the drink, they used to mix animal fat with the crushed coffee beans, and they ate this ball of energy.

10. How to prepare

This is a very subjective topic, as there are several techniques and each one has their own way of preparing coffee. Generally speaking, many people think that the stronger the flavor and the darker the color of the coffee, the more caffeine it contains. But roasting does not affect the amount of caffeine in the product. When roasting, moisture evaporates from the grain and it becomes larger, forming a “cafeolei”, responsible for the aroma.

Bonus: Drinking too much coffee leads to weight gain.

Coffee boosts the hormone cortisol, which makes you crave more sugar and sweets. Plus, caffeine disrupts our sleep cycle, so the next day, you might feel less energetic and more tempted to snack on different treats.
