A dog’s sense of smell can be up to 100,000 times more acute than that of humans. In this sense, the presence of sniffer dogs is essential to speed up and reinforce the work of firefighters in rescuing victims of accidents and major tragedies.

In the Military Fire Department, the pair of firefighter and search dog is called a “binomial”. With this partnership, the firefighter starts to live with and be responsible for training the dog. Dogs are conditioned to face training and missions as a kind of “game” in which they are encouraged to seek the “reward”, which in this case is the rescue of victims. Thus, dogs become “addicted” to playing and increasingly attached to humans and the result of this? Dogs feel encouraged to overcome the most varied obstacles, without this interfering with their sweet and playful side.

The dog Zaara specializes in search and rescue. She participated in the emergency mission, in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais), after the dam broke, helping to find several victims of this tragedy.

This year, Zaara was chosen as the official model for the Santa Catarina Military Fire Brigade sweater campaign, showing off her cuteness to encourage donations.

The labrador Johny, as well as the little dog Zaara, also worked in Brumadinho, putting into practice all the learning obtained from the constant training in search and rescue.

At the awards, Johny was not left out and also received a medal of honor for merit, being recognized for his efforts in the tragedy of Brumadinho.

The little dog Ronda was diagnosed with a malformation in the hip joint, and many thought that training her would be in vain, since her physical condition would prevent her from having a good performance as a firefighter assistant. But Ronda and her owner objected to this, and the little dog was trained. Years later, she managed to join the Fire Department, even being nationally certified as fit for search and rescue.

In her free time, Ronda takes the opportunity to rest, but in order not to get bored, she soon plays a joke or plays a prank.

Seven is an Australian Cattle Dog, a breed that has a constant need for exercise and attention. In this sense, working in the Military Fire Department, Seven has everything he needs. The puppy constantly undergoes training to hone its skills.

As a form of affection, the firefighters organize a party to celebrate the dogs’ birthdays and, by tradition, on the day, they also take the opportunity to bathe the animal and its handler.

The Labrador Ice was the first dog trained to act as a lifeguard in Brazil and was given an auxiliary mission in rescuing drowning victims on a beach in Santa Catarina.

Ice has a long resume as a firefighter’s dog, with several participations in occurrences, including major disasters, such as the one in Mariana (Minas Gerais) in 2015 in which Ice helped to locate people who disappeared after the dam collapsed.

In 2018, Ice was retired by the fire department and currently works as a therapy dog ​​in hospitals, visits schools and helps train other animals in the corporation.

Ice, who began to be trained by firefighters at 45 days old, this year celebrated his 10th birthday and won a beautiful party; a way of honoring him for the services rendered to society.

In the photo, the little dog Delta receives greetings for her retirement after 8 years of contribution to the Fire Department and the Civil Police. Delta worked in the area of ​​search and rescue of victims and participated in several works, the most recent being the collapse of buildings in Muzema (Rio de Janeiro) in April 2019, where she sniffed out bodies and survivors of this tragedy.

Generally, fire dogs start to be trained very early and are retired at 10 years old, as happened with the female dog Delta.

To continue and reinforce the operation with dogs, from time to time, a new pack is born, which in most cases descends from the same family, thus maintaining the excellent genetics.

Sarah is a Labrador retriever, considered one of the easiest to train and has the best sense of smell. Trained in search and rescue, she has acted in several occurrences, such as landslides looking for buried victims.

About to turn 5 years old, Sarah keeps the same playful way as when she was a puppy and can’t resist playing with a ball.

Brida, a Belgian Shepherd Malinois, is trained to locate bodies or survivors in any terrain (land or water), including major catastrophes, such as her recent performance in Brumadinho.

In the photo above, Brida proudly poses, showing off her international certification in rural search and rescue. Brida was also recognized for her performance in Brumadinho, being honored with a medal.

Hunter is a 5-year-old Labrador retriever with a very keen sense of smell. He is a national reference as a search dog, as he performs excellently in operations that help firefighters and, in addition, he still collaborates with civil police investigations.

He was also one of the dogs that participated in Brumadinho and went viral on the internet after the release of a video in which he points to the location of a buried body.

The records aren’t just from search and rescue missions; Hunter also appears in moments of rest and games, which end up revealing the other face of the brave firedog.

Fire dogs show their bravery not only on land or water, but also when subjected to operations involving heights.

In this sense, Scooby the labrador receives training for boarding and disembarking aircraft to speed up the missions with the firefighters.

Scooby, now 4 years old, has been training to become an excellent search dog since he was a few months old puppy.
