Meet the company that turns chewing gum into objects

Chewing gum after use is a big problem in cities. Just take a walk along any street with a closer look to notice gum stuck in every corner. The product takes 20 to 25 years to decompose. And cleaning streets and public spaces of this filth is a big problem for governments all over the world.

But a British company had a brilliant idea to deal with this challenge, turning it into a great business opportunity. Meet Gumdrop, the company that turns chewed gum into objects like balls and yo-yos.

O awesome.club shows, in this post, the work of the company and the incredible objects it produces.

Based in London, Gumdrop was founded in 2009 by Anna Bullus and is the first company in the world to transform chewed gum into plastic objects.

The businesswoman has installed some collectors in public places in the British capital, where people can throw chewed gum for recycling.

The idea came after Anna and her team evaluated the materials that make up the gum and concluded that they contain polymers similar to those of rubber. From that conclusion, Gundrop started to produce shoe soles. But, of course, the production didn’t stop there. Then came pens, coffee cups, boots and many other objects.

Recycled gum makes up about 20% of the composition of these products, the rest being common plastic.

The development team continues to evaluate new applications for chewing gum.
