10 Curiosities about British royal weddings that few people know about

Although British royal weddings have gone through some changes in recent years, they still remain very true to some traditions. Today, for example, we see much greater popular participation than in the past, but that doesn’t mean that the rules and protocols are gone.

O awesome.club decided to research some fun facts about British royal weddings that not everyone knows. Check out what we found out right now.

1. The wedding ring Diana received became the engagement ring Prince William gave Kate

According to a source close to the royal family, Princes William and Harry were able to choose two items from their mother as a souvenir. Although Harry chose the ring, when William began to think about asking Kate for her hand in marriage, he decided to give the gift to his brother.

Harry inherited two stones from his mother’s collection and used them for a bespoke wedding band for his wife, Meghan. He knew that diamonds were highly prized by the Princess of Wales and he decided to honor her that way.

2. Most royal brides wear a borrowed tiara on their wedding day

There are some rules for royal women who want to wear a tiara. For example, they cannot choose just any one, they have to choose one among many options previously selected by the queen or simply use one that the queen herself has chosen. In addition, they postpone the first attempt at wearing it until it’s time to get married and receive the tiara on official loan for life.

Kate, for example, chose a tiara that was smaller than the average tiara because she knew it wouldn’t give her headaches. Known as the Cartier Halo, it was used by the Duchess of Cambridge only once (at least in public), on her wedding day.

3. Traditionally, the bride’s bouquet has at least a few myrtle sprigs

The tradition of planting myrtle started with Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, who was married in 1858. According to the story, Prince Albert’s grandmother gave a branch of myrtle to Queen Victoria and it was planted on the estate of Osborne House, where can still be found.

Meghan Markle decided to follow the tradition. Her bouquet had in the middle some flowers carefully selected by her husband and also had the “forget-me-not” flower, favorite of Princess Diana.

4. Royal couples are taken in a horse-drawn carriage after the ceremony

After the wedding, the bride and groom are taken in a horse-drawn carriage, as was the case with Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The 1902 State Landau is reserved for the Queen within Great Britain and was used for the bridal walk after the wedding.

If the weather is nice, the roof can be opened, allowing the public to get a better look at the royals. However, if there is a threat of rain, the vehicle can be replaced by the Gold State Coach, a carriage that has been used in the coronation ceremony of every British monarch since George IV.

Another curiosity: although taking a ride in a royal carriage seems like a princess’s dream, in fact the experience can cause nausea, and this has been confirmed by the Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Elizabeth II herself.

5. Queen Elizabeth II received coupons to pay for her wedding dress

6. Princess Beatrice got married (in secret) wearing an iconic dress that once belonged to Queen Elizabeth II

Princess Beatrice was married in secret to Edoardo Mapelli at the Chapel Royal of All Saints at Royal Lodge, and attended by just 20 guests. For the ceremony, she chose a vintage gown by one of the royal designers that had been worn by the Queen on at least three occasions.

The romantic dress is in ivory tones and decorated with beading from the bosom to the mid-skirt. It was worn by the Queen for the first time in 1961. The other two times were the premiere of the film Lawrence of Arabia in 1962 and the opening of Parliament in 1966. But it was refurbished for the Princess’s wedding, particularly on the sleeves.

7. The white dress tradition was established by Queen Victoria

Back in the day white dresses were worn by court women and brides wore dresses of different shades. Red, oddly enough, was one of the most used. In 1840, Queen Victoria decided to start a new tradition and chose white for her wedding.

8. Kate Middleton did a bridal makeup without the help of professionals

Although Kate Middleton could have chosen the best makeup artists in the world, she claimed that no one knows her face as well as she does and therefore no one could do makeup like her. Kate was the first royal bride since the Queen to walk down the aisle without expert help.

Many people thought that her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, had made the same decision, as her wedding day makeup looked very natural. However, that didn’t happen. The job was done by his friend Daniel Martin, a professional makeup artist.
