10 Body Language Expressions You Should Ditch Immediately

We are not always able to realize what we are doing with our legs, hands or facial expressions when we are in the presence of other people. In fact, in most situations, we do not even realize that this is an important aspect. But the truth is, body language can really say a lot about our personality and our feelings. And it can be crucial when we want to make a good impression and, for example, land our dream job. On the other hand, the opposite also happens: knowing what to do with the body also serves to keep away those people with whom we prefer not to have contact.

We, from awesome.club, we found that certain body language habits must be avoided to have positive effects in our lives. Want to know what they are? Keep reading!

1. Adopt a “droopy” and lazy posture

The posture adopted can say a lot about your self-esteem and confidence in yourself. Staying in a retracted position reveals a lot of self-doubt. By failing to correct our own posture, we end up normalizing the habit of, for example, slipping on the back of a chair. What’s worse is that the habit becomes so trivialized that we run the serious risk of passing on a “fallen” image even when we are not in situations considered uncomfortable. In these cases, one thing is certain: you will be seen as someone with low self-esteem.

2. Keep legs or arms crossed

For many people, it is natural to cross arms and legs when sitting down. However, talking to someone while keeping your limbs crossed is sure to leave your interlocutor feeling that you are on the defensive. The other person may understand that there is no openness for interaction or for you to listen to what they have to say. Thus, the individual who is talking to you will possibly end up finding that he makes you uncomfortable. Leaving your legs and arms uncrossed while keeping your hands visible will make you appear more trustworthy.

3. Signs of restlessness

Whether it’s a habit you’ve cultivated forever or something you just do in search of relaxation during stressful situations, the most correct thing is to abolish body language expressions that reveal restlessness. If you are always twirling a lock of hair around your fingers, touching your rings, shaking your hands and feet or repeatedly looking at your watch when talking or attending an important meeting, it will come across that you are bored and would rather be somewhere else.

4. Scratching your neck

Perhaps you enjoy scratching your neck as a means of relieving stress. Another possibility is that the gesture is performed, even if unintentionally, to relax the tension in that part of the body, even if nothing is keeping you awake. In any case, be aware of what you are doing with your own hands and try to avoid such behavior as much as possible. Otherwise, your interlocutors will perceive you as someone anxious and eternally uncomfortable.

5. Biting your nails

Another classic sign that shows how nervous we are is biting our nails. Perhaps the custom will even help relieve stress, but on the other hand it will make your insecurity clear. Not to mention that biting your nails causes distraction in your interlocutor and that many people see such a habit as something disgusting and repulsive. And to top it off, the general condition of your nails deteriorates a lot. Don’t forget: at least in the first moment, we are always judged by appearance. And you don’t want to make a bad impression, right?

6. Lack of eye contact

Avoiding eye contact indicates that you don’t trust yourself, that you don’t like the person you’re talking to, or that you’re not being sincere. But beware of the opposite: staring someone intensely, looking them straight in the eye, gives an aggressive impression and it is the interlocutor who can end up becoming uncomfortable. Prefer to exchange a series of longer glances, taking breaks between them.

7. Appearing distracted

Yes, getting distracted while you’re talking to someone is something that really reveals bad manners, and it’s even worse when you don’t even realize you’re doing it. In some cases, you may even be paying attention, but as you stare into space, it ends up giving the impression that you are not listening. Make an effort not to look away, showing interest in what the other person is saying, or else make some gesture that allows the interlocutor to clearly understand how much you are participating in the conversation.

8. Roll your eyes

Rolling your eyes is one of the most obvious signs of disrespect. When you’re among friends, the attitude can even be harmless, a form of non-verbal communication to let someone close to you how bored or irritated you are. However, if you roll your eyes when talking to a co-worker, boss or a complete stranger, be prepared to be interpreted as someone unpleasant and out to offend others.

9. If you forget to smile

Especially in more formal situations, we can completely forget to smile. However, giving a nice smile is a great strategy to appear open and confident. As a result, your interlocutors may feel more comfortable smiling back, creating a generally positive atmosphere in the environment and breaking the ice, especially in first contacts. But here’s an important tip: don’t force yourself to smile, because a “yellow” smile will make it be interpreted as false and not worthy of trust.

10. Being too quiet

Being too calm and quiet can be taken as a sign that you don’t want to talk to the other person or hear what they have to say. Remaining impassive is sure to make your interlocutors uncomfortable. A good way to break through this block is by showing enthusiasm through facial expressions and mirroring yourself in the other person’s gestures, but without making it too “in the face”. Thus, you will certainly cause a more positive idea.
