The natural world is of inestimable value, and every action by humanity has an impact on the possibility of preserving or destroying it. To our delight, there are species that have been increasing their population to the point where they are no longer at risk of extinction. And we do not deny that we see such good news as a second opportunity to leave a better planet as an inheritance for future generations. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has developed a classification or Red List to determine the degree of risk to which animals are exposed. The scale ranges from “extinct” to “least concern”.
O awesome.club prepared a list of animals that were out of danger of extinction thanks to the efforts of humans determined to protect them. Furthermore, we want to showcase beautiful offspring that will play an important role as the future of their respective species.
1. Gray Wolf
The gray wolf is one of the most widespread mammals on the planet, but the destruction of its habitat, poisoning and rampant hunting have compromised the species. Between 1982 and 1994, wolves were on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s endangered species list.
2. Southern white rhino
The situation of the white rhinoceros has already improved a lot when it comes to the preservation of the species. The animal has been removed from the list of endangered animals, thanks to conservation and reintroduction programs. In a census carried out in 2007, the population of the animal was 17,500, reaching the mark of 20,000 specimens in the wild.
3. Grizzly Bear
Preservation efforts have allowed the grizzly story to have a happy ending. Today, it is on Least Concern status on the IUCN list. During the 1960s, it was estimated that there were between 600 and 800 examples. Currently, the number of bears has increased by up to five times compared to the population in 1975.
4. Wild Turkey
The wild turkey is a variation of the domestic turkey. The constant siege of its natural habitat has caused the number of individuals to drop dramatically. It is believed that, in 1930, its population in the United States reached only 30 thousand birds. The capture and reintroduction programs for the animals have had good results, causing them to enter a status of Least Concern.
5. North American alligator
In 1967, the North American alligator was cataloged as an endangered species in the United States. The result of this was that, despite the constant siege of its habitat, the animal managed to expand its population. In 1987, the country’s Fisheries and Wild Fauna Service removed the animal from the list due to the reestablished number of reptiles.
6. American Beaver
Like humans, beavers are capable of modifying the environment around them. However, there was a great demand for the animal’s skin in the early 19th century. Fortunately, the efforts employed paid off, and beavers escaped the IUCN risk list.
7. Island fox
This little animal is the second smallest fox in the world, behind only the African Fennec fox. The story involving its risk of extinction has to do with a drastic drop in the population that occurred in 1990: the number of individuals went from 450 to only 15 specimens. Today, thanks to the work of committed people, the species is in the near threatened category, with a growing number of animals.
8. Steller Sea Lion
The Steller sea lion is an animal that lives in the North Pacific Ocean and is slightly smaller than the walrus or elephant seal. A few years ago, its risk of extinction reached alarming levels, due to the disappearance of 70% to 80% of its population, which occurred in the 1970s. Luckily for the planet, the species is classified as almost threatened on the IUCN scale.
9. American Bison
The American bison or buffalo was and remains an important part of the traditional North American landscape. In the 17th century, they numbered in the millions, but hunting brought the species to the brink of extinction around 1880, when there were fewer than 100 individuals living in the wild. For some time now, initiatives aimed at protecting these animals have been put into practice and have allowed the bison to leave the endangered list to enter the near threatened list.
10. Sigh
The chiru, the Tibetan antelope, has been in the spotlight for many years as being threatened with extinction. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was estimated that there were one million specimens, but in 1990, the number of individuals had dropped drastically, reaching only 75 thousand. Fortunately, efforts to protect the species have borne fruit: the estimate was that there were 150,000 chirus in 2009. In 2016, the animal left its endangered status, being classified as near threatened.
Did you know that the animals mentioned above were at risk of disappearing from the planet? In your opinion, which species nowadays deserve special protection so that they do not disappear? Comment!
