The efficiency of red pepper against fat makes even those who are not very fans of spicy food pay attention to the seasoning. The effort is worth it, according to a study just released in the mBioJournal of the American Society for Microbiology.

Capsaicin, the substance responsible for the spice’s sting, not only encourages the body to burn more calories, but also maintains a balance between good and bad bacteria in the gut. Result: less chronic inflammation, which prevents easy weight gain. “Pepper also has an antioxidant action and protects against cancer”, says nutritionist Cyntia de Oliveira, from Centro Universitário Celso Lisboa, in Rio.
How much to consume: 1/2 chili pepper or 1 teaspoon of the powdered version per day, provided you do not have gastritis, ulcers and tendency to hemorrhoids.
