Whey protein causes acne? – GOOD SHAPE

A few years ago, when I did my residency in dermatology, studies said that diet was unrelated to acne. However, as always, the clinic is sovereign! And if any patient reported a relationship between a food and the appearance of a greater number of acne lesions, we advised them to try to avoid that food (sweets, fats, peanuts, among others).

Over time, we observed that the studies were “poorly done” and their results were misinterpreted, because in fact, there is a relationship between the foods eaten and the appearance of acne.

In the latest studies, “well done”, the relationship of milk and its derivatives with the greater appearance of acne has been proven. It is important to say, that the appearance of acne presents a genetic predisposition, therefore, only people prone will have lesions with exaggerated consumption of certain foods.

Excessive milk can stimulate hormonal activity, inflammation, sebum production and the proliferation of bacteria that are directly associated with acne.

Some types of whey protein are derived from milk protein and for this reason they can cause or worsen acne in predisposed people. There are studies that indicate Whey as an important influencer of resistant acne. Because it is rich in IGF-1, a hormone similar to insulin 1, it can increase sebum production and influence the appearance or worsening of acne.
