What really happens when a fly lands on your food

People tend to have very mixed reactions when they see a fly very well settled in their food. There are, for example, those who immediately throw all food away, no matter how delicious it is. On the other hand, some prefer to continue eating as if nothing had happened, after all, “it’s just a fly”. However, the truth is that such insects can really bring trouble to your plate, and it’s better to be well informed than to ignore the matter entirely.

To help you understand everything that happens when a fly touches your food, the incredible.club conducted a survey and prepared this post for you.

Flies are known to contaminate food with, at the very least, residue from the last place they landed. But apparently, the impact that these little creatures cause is inversely proportional to their size, and much more complicated than you can imagine.

1. They can vomit in your food

If there’s one thing you need to know about the topic, it’s this: Houseflies feed by sucking up fluids with the help of their tube-like mouths. Because of the shape of their mouth, they need to turn any food into liquid. To do so, they vomit their own saliva onto their plate of food. And the substance can contain anything the fly has ingested before (rotten meat or feces, for example).

2. They can lay eggs in their meal

3. Flies’ paws and wings can turn their food into a breeding ground for bacteria.

We already know that these insects carry many bacteria in their bodies. And its contamination potential is enormous. According to the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, “with each step of the numerous steps taken by a fly, it leaves behind a trail of colonies of microbes”. This means that everything they touch becomes seriously infected as well.

4. They can transmit more than 60 diseases

Houseflies can transmit at least 65 different diseases by crawling in garbage and food. The list includes dysentery, diarrhea, cholera and even leprosy. And it’s not just humans who can suffer from the problem, but also other animals like chickens and pigs.

What do you usually do when there are flies hanging around your food? Do you take any action or continue to eat normally? Do you know any techniques to keep your house free of flies and other insects? Comment!
