What is prenatal stimulation and how can you practice it?

Have you heard of prenatal stimulation? This is a technique that aims to stimulate the baby before birth, helping in its development during almost the entire pregnancy. Thanks to tests that monitor fetal well-being in the mother’s womb, we know that, from the third month of pregnancy, the baby’s senses are already developed and are receptive to what happens outside and to the sensations and emotions that the mother experiences .

O awesome.club wants to share with you what types of prenatal stimulation can be performed to benefit the baby’s intelligence, growth and physical development and to strengthen his bond with mom and dad.

tactile stimulation

This stimulus has to do with the direct contact between the mother and the baby. The fetus’s sensitivity begins to develop from the 7th week of gestation, so that if the mother puts some pressure on her womb, the vibrations can be transmitted through the amniotic fluid and reach the baby.

It is recommended to do gentle massages on the belly with the tips of the fingers, with some body cream or even with different textures (such as with a brush or a feather duster). The important thing in this exercise is that the movements are slow and calm, so that the baby perceives the contact in a subtle way and is not overstimulated.

motor stimulation

This stimulation can be performed from the 10th week of pregnancy onwards, when the semicircular canals are formed in the baby, related to balance. However, the most recommended thing is to intensify it when you have passed the first trimester of pregnancy.

Stimulation is carried out by exercises practiced by the mother, such as, for example, swimming, moderate dancing or Pilates, as long as they are aimed at pregnant women. The woman can also practice yoga as part of this technique.

auditory stimulation

This technique can start to be put into practice from the 14th week of pregnancy, when the baby’s auditory system is developed. It consists in talking to the tummy clearly and softly: you can sing to the baby, read stories and put on music with simple melodies, always at a moderate volume.

It is very important that, according to the possibilities, both the father and the mother are involved in this process, so that the baby recognizes the voices of the people who will be part of his life. The same goes for the sounds of a pet or nature.

visual stimulation

From the 27th week of gestation, the baby is able to perceive light, both natural and artificial, through the mother’s abdominal wall. In this way, the cerebral cortex can be stimulated and, with it, the ocular retina and optic nerve.

The future mother can uncover her belly and sunbathe for 10 or 15 seconds and then cover it up. She can also shine a flashlight on her belly and slowly move it sideways or up and down. The baby should react and may even do a few kicks to confirm this.

According to embryology, prenatal stimulation helps to develop a child’s communication, hand-eye coordination, reasoning, sense of music and creativity, among many other things.

Much of fetal development can be positively or negatively affected by stimuli that occur at this early stage. Therefore, it is recommended that pregnant women are always in quiet environments, but at the same time active enough to promote the mental and physical health of the baby.
