What is generational theory and which generation do you belong to?

In 1991, American scientists Neil Howe and William Strauss created the generational theory. According to her, every 20 or 25 years a new generation is born, with different character traits, habits and identity, which differentiate each one of them in comparison with the others.

Howe and Strauss named and defined the characteristics of each generation from 1433 onwards. However, we are interested in showing the last four, with whom we live day by day and can easily create a regular family: the smallest member Miguel (generation Z), her older sister (Y generation), your father (generation X) and his grandmother (generation “Baby Boomers”🇧🇷 We’ll talk about each one in more detail.

Generation “Baby Boomers”

The grandmother’s generation is called the “Baby Boomers”. This name was received due to the post-war increase in the birth rate. Representatives of this generation have a high level of patriotism. They are optimistic, have team spirit and collectivism. It is important for them to help each other, to work together.

They know how to do practically any manual work: they cook very well, sew, fish, are educated and know many sciences. Many of the baby boomers are active, go to the gym, learn from devices and travel. We will repeat again that they are also distinguished by enviable health and energy.

generation X

Dates of birth: from 1961 to 1981

Miguel’s father is 47 years old. He has been working at a famous construction company for 20 years. He started at the lowest position and now holds the position of assistant director. He is hardworking, responsible, and all the complicated work is done personally.

Miguel’s father is a brilliant representative of Generation X🇧🇷 It’s a generation of singles, dedicated to hard work and personal success. These people got used to being independent from childhood: they did their homework, went to school, prepared food and did many chores without the help of others.

People of Generation X they are generally distinguished by global awareness, technical wisdom and independence in almost everything. They often prefer to work for 30 or 40 years in the same organization, accumulating experience and rising from a low level to a high position.

Generation Y or Millennial

Dates of birth: from 1981 to 2004

Miguel’s older sister is 23 years old. She studies abroad, has thousands of followers on Facebook, frequently visits new cafes, parties and art exhibitions with her friends. She is a representative of generation Y or Millennial.

Millennials are often referred to as the “social media generation”. The external environment around them has changed incredibly fast, which is why they don’t look like their parents. A prestigious job and professional promotion do not attract them. They are not willing to work for many years for a company, prefer flexible hours and immediate compensation for the work done.

In general, these are energetic people who adapt easily, know how to work in large volumes, constantly aspire to new knowledge and develop. They understand that time passes quickly, so they don’t want to be experts in just one area, but have skills in different sectors at the same time.

Generation Z

Dates of birth: from 2005 to the present day

Michael is 15 years old. He uses every possible device. He knows all the trends, the internet and virtual reality. In the future, he wants to be a video game designer.

He is currently the representative of the last Generation Z. These are children who not only grew up with the internet, but were born with an Instagram profile and can no longer imagine their lives without digital technologies. They are not used to physical labor and understanding how it works. They focus on self-expression and self-development.

People from Generation Z have immunity to advertising, because they got used to it from childhood. They are not worshipers of famous brands. For them, it is more important that the article is ecological and that it develops them as people.

As Miguel likes to repeat: “soon all things, the welcome mat, everything will be smart, only you will be a fool in this house”. And he’s right. The boundary between real and virtual life for the new generation almost does not exist.

In fact, it is still too early to talk about this, since it is not clear what the last generation will look like, although sociologists can assume something.

Generation Z will surpass the previous one in speed and mental development. Your reps will learn everything faster, interact better with technology, and master new skills.

The speed of technological development is increasing, so we can only assume that the next generation will be even smarter, adapt quickly and completely eliminate all racial, ethnic, gender and other stereotypes in all spheres of life.
