What is gender fluid?

Sexuality is everywhere and, thanks to the open minds of the new generations, it seems that today certain taboos are being broken when talking about her. However, although binarism remains entrenched, the truth is that there are many different realities that allow people who do not identify with a specific gender to be identified. This is what those who recognize themselves as genderfluid feel, challenging the pre-established order and raising the possibility of move through the genreflowing between different gender identities.

Little by little, the genderfluid identity is emerging in our society and although the term is relatively new, the concept is not, since before there were many people who felt this way, but had no way to identify themselves. The fluid gender, currently, is also subjugated to the dominant one: the heteronormative, so gender-fluid people still are exposed to oppressive, negative experiences or even discrimination. However, people who identify with genderfluid are those who do not want to classify this identity because it is changeable.

What is the difference between gender fluid and non-binary

Although sometimes there is a tendency to confuse what gender fluid or genderfluid is with being non-binary, which is why it is necessary to explain that the terms gender fluid and non-binary are not the same. Being binary or non-binary is related to gender identities that are recognized with certain masculine and feminine aspects, but They do not identify with a man or a woman specifically. Non-binary people also often use neutral pronouns to put an end to the assignment of a specific gender marked by traditional binarism. On the other hand, people who recognize themselves as gender fluid move between genders in an ambiguous and changing way, establishing their own identity parameters that can change over time and the context or circumstances of each person. However, gender fluid is not automatically associated with sexual identitythat is, it does not imply the desire to change sex, and it should not be related to sexual orientation, given that through fluid gender you can change your identity but always feel comfortable in the same sexuality.

Although the descriptions have many points in common, you should know that the main difference between one concept and another is that the term non-binary is the umbrella that encompasses all those forms that they do not agree with the genres traditionally imposed, classic or binary, that is, the masculine and feminine gender. Thus, fluid gender is part of one of the types of non-binary gender that is characterized by combining the spectrums of both genders (male and female) in a fluid and changing way.

How to know if I am gender fluid

Identify with a gender it is not innate, but the feeling of relevance is directly associated with how you feel. For this reason, although as a general rule we tend to label everything, the fluid gender uses this term precisely in a descriptive way, to be able to identify themselves without having to decide what they are and how they feel in binary terms. But how do you know if you are part of the genderfluid identity? These are some of the characteristics that all those people who identify with this gender have in common:

You do not identify 100% as female or male.. That is to say: you do not feel comfortable with the gender you were assigned at birth, but you also do not feel that you belong completely to the opposite gender. You feel that the gender identity for you is something unstable and that can vary with time and the circumstances that surround you, sometimes feeling more masculine and sometimes feeling more feminine. So you don’t like to be pigeonholed into a specific genre. You can associate yourself with elements and aspects of both genders and you feel that everyone defines you. When speaking you can use gender pronouns interchangeably or you use the neutral. Your physical appearance and your look is not assigned to any gender or it flows between both, which are defined as androgynous looks.

Terms and concepts can help define you and identify you with more people who think or feel like you, but they should never be a descriptive label, but rather of an indicative nature. If you feel that your identity can flow between the masculine and feminine gender and that you do not recognize yourself 100% with either of the two identities, you can identify with the fluid gender.
