According to the gynecologist, ”female or vaginal lubrication, in a simple way, is nothing more than a liquid produced by the female body to keep the vagina lubricated. This natural secretion is produced by the cervix and by glands that are found in the vaginal wall: Bartholin and Skeene glands. This fluid is very important to maintain vaginal cleanliness and to facilitate sexual intercourse.”

1. What causes lack of female lubrication?

Several factors can influence the decrease in this fluid, among the main causes: hormonal changes (such as menopause), use of medications (such as contraceptives), stress, little sexual stimulation, infections, among others.

2. Can over-lubrication be a problem?

This is something rare, but if this secretion is not pathological (caused by an infection) there is no problem, unless, even if it is not an infection, it bothers this woman a lot.

3. How to increase female lubrication?

Depends on what’s going on with this woman. Sometimes the issue is resolved by treating infections, indicating the use of lubricants, replacing hormones, vaginal laser treatments, among others. But each case will need a medical evaluation.

4. Can foods increase female lubrication?

There is no specific food that will increase lubrication, but some foods contribute to a healthy vagina: vegetables, eating two servings of fruit a day, yogurt, cranberries, garlic, and kale. Remembering that these foods are for oral intake and not to put them in the vagina!

5. How to decrease female lubrication?

There is no specific formula for this, but by maintaining a balanced diet and exercising, you will have a balanced body, and consequently a healthy vagina.

6. Does the menstrual cycle influence female lubrication?

Certainly! The woman who has her natural cycle (without using hormonal contraception) perceives this more easily. Depending on the phase you are in, such as the period of ovulation, there may be an increase in lubrication and even a change in the consistency and color of this natural fluid.

7. Can stressful situations influence female lubrication?

Yup. Mainly due to the increase in the stress hormone that facilitates changes in the vaginal flora, which can contribute to infections and consequently changes in vaginal secretion.
