What are these eruptions
The official name for these rashes is milium, but they are also known as milia. Perhaps the first thing you should know is that they contain keratin, so they shouldn’t be squeezed. They usually appear on the eyelids, cheeks and forehead. Many people think that these spots are pimples, but acne is usually triggered by hormonal issues, unlike in this case.
Why do they appear?
No one knows exactly what causes milia, but there are a few possible explanations. The effects of an irritation, sun exposure, burns or the use of chemicals are some likely causes. Another potential reason is the buildup of dead skin that gets trapped in the pores. However, the most likely answer is genetics.
What to do about it?
You don’t have to do anything, because these rashes are completely harmless. However, if you are concerned about the aesthetic aspect, there are some solutions that can help you. But keep in mind that none of the preventative measures have proven to be entirely effective, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try.
1. Moisturize and protect the skin
Investing in a good sunscreen and a good moisturizer is a good idea. These products protect the skin and make it softer and more flexible. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen even in winter or when sitting by a window.
2. Exfoliating
The important thing here is not to overdo it. Use gentle exfoliators to avoid irritating the skin and causing even more breakouts. Gently remove dead cells at home or have facials with people who are proven to be professionals.
3. Try using products with retinol
Some people claim that retinol is a component that helps eliminate milia. Although creams with retinol are good for the skin, keep in mind that some products with this component can be harsh, so talk to a dermatologist.
4. Use salicylic acid
This acid is often recommended as a way to fight acne and may work to eliminate milia. The objective here is to thin the skin layers and thus release the milia cyst. Ideally, salicylic acid should be applied before bed.
