We looked at the relationship between Rose and Jack and noticed that the love story on Titanic was romanticized

Titanic it is often considered one of the best romantic films in the history of cinema. For many viewers, the protagonists’ relationship has become an example of what true love should be like. But, when we evaluate the whole romanticization of the story, we can conclude that Rose was not as innocent and delicate as she seemed, that Jack became a victim of the selfishness of others and that the main character’s fiancé was not so “villainous”.

we, from awesome.club, we love the James Cameron movie, but we’re used to seeing things from a broader perspective. The obvious chemistry between Rose and Jack is just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended) and if we look further, we’ll see that everything in this story is turned upside down.

1. Both threw themselves into a recent and troubled relationship

Some attentive onlookers calculated that a little over 48 hours had passed from the moment Rose was saved from jumping off the ship to the moment Jack froze in the icy water. But is it really possible to love a person in two days?

According to psychologists, attraction can appear at first sight, but in order to experience love, it is necessary to get to know the person better. In any relationship there is that ‘second phase’, in which, instead of blind passion, comes the understanding that the partner is a person of ‘flesh and blood’, with strengths and weaknesses. If, even after that, people want to be together, they probably have deep feelings that can turn into true love.

“Passion happens quickly. Love is slow”

But, after all, it is possible to say that there was precisely love among the protagonists? We saw passion and attraction fueled by strong emotions: Rose didn’t want to marry her mother’s chosen fiancé while Jack approached the ‘forbidden fruit’, an upper-class young woman. But we cannot conclude whether these feelings could, effectively, be transformed into love.

2. Rose tricked her fiancé, but Jack didn’t seem to mind it

The young woman was traveling with her mother and fiance, but chose to spend time with a guy she barely knew. Jack knew of his marital status. affairbut that didn’t stop him from drawing her in the famous scene where she lies down on the couch.

Some viewers believe that the main characters behaved in the worst possible way in the film and that the ‘villain’ Caledon Hockley, or simply Cal, perhaps deserved a little more understanding.

3. Rose had tendencies towards exhibitionistic and manipulative behavior

The scene in which the protagonist threatens to jump overboard can also be purely exhibitionist. It is no accident that, of all corners of the huge ship, Rose chose the most visible area, the stern. Of course, a 17-year-old girl, forced to marry against her will, deserves more understanding. But is it worth idealizing so much a teenager with emotions in full bloom?

4. Jack was a fool, but he didn’t give up what he considered to be his

The boy was the adventurous and free-living type. He could have spent one night on the streets of Paris and the next he could have entered into a relationship with a committed person. Jack probably wasn’t a bad guy: carefree, easy going, great sketcher. But he was far from a guy who seemed to actually commit to something or someone.

In his first conversation with Rose (the one where she found herself in the stern threatening to throw herself overboard), Jack decided to joke and tease the young woman. Fortunately, it all turned out well, but in real life this could have had a sad ending. People who find themselves in a situation like Rose’s cannot be called “weak” and asked how exactly they plan to carry out their plans.

In the flirting stage, Jack’s penchant for psychological manipulation is visible. The boy idealized with his new girlfriend how he planned to have fun with her on the other side of the Atlantic. Basically, Jack was telling Rose what she wanted to hear; therefore, the young woman was willing to accompany him wherever he went.

5. Throughout the movie, Jack ‘saved’ his lover several times

Jack was constantly saving Rose: from her fiance, from boredom, and ultimately from hypothermia. Viewers who saw the film at the time of its release admired the romance, but over time it became clear that the boy’s main mission was to sacrifice himself for the girl’s sake. Given their short courtship time, Jack’s sacrifices often seem excessive.

And what about Rose? She was unhappy and seemed to be waiting for a prince to pull her out of the ‘handcuffs’ of an overbearing mother and arrogant fiancé. The prince came and saved her, paying for it with his life. Had it not been for this prince, it is unlikely that Rose would have been able to avoid the marriage. She would have to live with an unloved man and remain a puppet in her mother’s hands. Only after losing Jack did she finally become independent.

6. Rose repeatedly failed to protect her ‘beloved’

When Jack pulled the girl from the stern and several crew members rushed to the spot to help her, the situation suggested the boy had bad intentions. He tried to defend himself, but who on that ship would listen to a young third-class man? Only later did Rose speak well of him. But why didn’t she do it in the moment of confusion? Wrapped in a blanket in the company of her fiancé, she simply watched as her rescuer was handcuffed.

In another scene, Rose practically without clothes asked Jack to draw her. And then she kept the drawing in the groom’s safe, not even thinking about what might happen to the poor artist when Cal found the evidence.

If the character played by Kate Winslet loved Jack so much, why didn’t she defend the boy when he was accused of stealing a diamond? She could have made up an excuse to protect her lover. But not. Instead, she just watched him as he was taken into custody again.

When she was placed in a lifeboat, the young woman decided to jump out and go back to Jack again. At first glance, a very romantic and altruistic act. On the other hand, she only complicated the situation. Maybe Jack would have survived by focusing on his own survival if Rose hadn’t done him such a disservice.

7. Rose didn’t seem to care about others

Some viewers believe that the girl only followed her own momentary desires. In several situations, she showed that she didn’t care for others and showed no gratitude for those who made her life more comfortable (family and fiance) or joyful (Jack).

After the shipwreck, the protagonist started everything from scratch, but apparently, she didn’t even bother to know if her mother had survived. Of course, we can’t call Ruth a nice person, but she was still her mother.

Already at an advanced age, Rose considered to have been the main ‘villain’ of Titanic. All her life, she kept a diamond that reminded her of her hated groom. According to some viewers, she could have sold the jewelry to help her granddaughter who took care of her.

8. The fiance, Cal, might not be as bad as the protagonist wanted to show

We know about the events on the Titanic only from Rose’s words. Everything gave the impression that she and Jack were the ‘good guys’, while Cal Hockley was something of a villain who got in the lovebirds’ way in every possible way. An internet user put herself in the groom’s shoes and created a completely different version of the facts.

I believe Cal was a good guy. Put yourself in his place. You have a beloved bride for whom you provide everything, including a luxury trip. During this trip, she is totally disrespectful to everyone and even tries to jump into the sea. You find out that some random adventurer saved you by convincing you to give up, so you try to reward him with the equivalent of $500 in today’s money. But that’s not good enough for your bride; then you invite him to a lavish dinner. After the meal, you go to bed and later discover that she was enjoying herself that night in the company of her new acquaintance and her friends. You get angry and tell the girl not to date the guy anymore. But then he finds out that his fiancee spent the night with this guy and posed naked for a cartoon. If you were in Cal’s shoes, you would be angry too. Then disaster strikes and you do everything you can to save her. But she jumps out of the lifeboat and swims back into the arms of her beloved adventurer. Even after all this, you still look for her to find out if she survived the disaster. © JTheberge83 / Reddit

“When viewers are younger, they’re outraged, ‘How could you do that to Jack?’ As they mature, they say, ‘What was Rose thinking?’”

There is another theory according to which Rose simply invented Jack to escape the oppressive reality. No wonder the researchers in the film found no record of Jack Dawson and Rose herself said: “He exists now only in my memory.” Her only real relationship was with Cal. In some scenes, they even wear similar outfits. Could it be a coincidence?

9. The relationship between Jack and Rose would probably have no future

Suppose Jack survived and started a new life with his beloved. Can you imagine what their story would be like? The main character was a rich and spoiled young woman, used to being served and not working. The boy was a poor artist who was content with little and could spend the night…
