We imagine what the costumes of “The Queen’s Gambit” would look like today

The series The Queen’s Gambit won over audiences and became a Netflix audience phenomenon. Not only did the plot checkmate, but the protagonist’s elegant wardrobe – inspired by the trends of the 1960s – has also given rise to talk. But have you ever stopped to think what the style of the chess queen would be like today?

Our team, from awesome.club, imagined what Beth Harmon’s wardrobe would look like if the series were set today. Do you agree with our choices? Check out!

Costume designer Gabriele Binder, who created Beth Harmon’s costume, said the purpose of the first looks of the protagonist — referring to the late 1950s — was to show the “outdated” character, using “dated” models (even for the time). But you can leave it to awesome.club, because our team “modernized” the chess player’s clothes. Our proposal is to repeat the overlapping style, putting on a long-sleeved blouse with a ruffle collar underneath, a trend among today’s fashionistas.

For Gabriele Binder, Beth Harmon would intuitively choose to wear pieces with plaid print — as the board is an essential part of your life. We can only agree on the choice, so we believe that this print should also integrate the chess player’s modern wardrobe. In our selection, the “gardener dress” no longer has pleats and becomes tighter. Finally, we believe that a turtleneck can leave the look more modern than a white dress shirt.

The “warm and stylish” combo is too good! We believe that Beth Harmon would continue to wear the turtleneck and rib knit blouse — after all, the model vintage it’s super high. However, we think the chess queen would leave the look more modern by exchanging the wool cap for a beret. Another accessory option, which is conquering the medium fashionand the bucket hat (also known as the Panama Hat).

When Beth becomes world champion, the costume designer opts for a look white from head to toe — just like the game piece. The idea, according to Gabriele Binder, was to make it clear that, from that point on, she was the “queen” and the “world” had become her “board”.

As the all-white composition marked the series, we need to transport the same sense of power to the present. So we imagine Beth using the combo blazer and dress pants with tennis, which gives the look an air more modern.

As the miniskirt was born in the 1960s, we already expected Beth Harmon to exude femininity and power when showing her legs. The model with the “male pleat” (as the pleat in the photo on the left is called) is no longer so common, but the draped miniskirts fairies have everything! For the top, we tried to keep the “V” neckline.

The dress worn by Beth during the Paris tournament is one of the show’s costume designer’s favorites. To copy the elegance of the Pierre Cardin piece, invest in models that contrast light and dark colors in “well-defined blocks”. looks current, more “cool”, do not follow such symmetrical formats and try to play with the abstract shapes🇧🇷

Beth’s beautiful green dress is so 1960s that we felt the need to see it 100% “modernised”. In this case, the green is no longer pastel to gain a neon and the black details boil down to the buttons🇧🇷

To compose this look, we “updated” a cardigan smooth (fake, we hope) fur for a bomber hipster with curly fur, just as fashionistas love. In place of buttons, the look the current one takes a zipper — much more practical, no?

A long black dress with a high collar hardly loses its elegance and versatility. We believe that the Beth of today would leave the pleats aside and opt for a tight silhouette, which follows the contour of the body. to leave the look modern and feminine, we believe that the dress can have a opening to thigh length — just like celebrities love to wear these days.
