We checked the result of 9 cosmetics advertisements

Cosmetic manufacturers never tire of offering more and more specific products, such as lip pencils, super resistant eyelash masks, long-lasting hair fixatives, solutions for split ends and so on. But do these promises really work?

A partner team of awesome.club in Russia he tried some of these products (the vast majority also sold here) to see if they really deliver the promised benefits. See right now.

1. Lipfinity Lip Color permanent lip pencil

What the ad promises:

The manufacturer promises that the pencil can withstand lunch with colleagues, coffee or dinner with friends. The packaging says: up to 24 hours resistance.

What actually happens:

We’ve chosen one of the most popular permanent lip pencils on the market. The kit includes 2 items: a creamy lip pencil and a clear gloss.

As promised, the lip liner really holds up to lunch and coffee, and we didn’t find any color marks on the cup used by the model. Already the shine smudged immediately. Our model kept the pencil all day and at night she tried to remove the product with a napkin but failed. It only came out with the help of a special makeup remover.

doesn’t lie: the pencil really can be called ‘permanent’.

2. Rimmel 60 Seconds Super Shine Nail Polish

What the ad promises:

The manufacturer claims that the nail polish dries in just 60 secondsand claims that the shine and color last up to 10 days.

What actually happens:

Unfortunately, our expectations were not fulfilled: exactly one minute after applying the nail polish, it looked dry, but it was only with a finger on the surface that the beauty was completely destroyed. To dry completely, it needs about 5 minutes.

An additional experiment showed that when applying two coats of nail polish, the effect only lasts for 2-3 days, after which it needs to be redone. Therefore, the second promise is also false.

lies: nail polish just doesn’t dry in 60 seconds.

3. Max Factor 2000 Calorie Water Resistant Mascara

According to the manufacturer: “The elegance of a classic image and the confidence offered by a water-resistant mascara will never leave you, whatever the weather”🇧🇷

What actually happens:

During the experiment, our model was subjected to different tests: watching a sentimental film that made her cry, a quick shower and cutting onions. The result was the same: the mask passed the test perfectly and did not smudge once.

doesn’t lie: this mask has withstood all tests.

4. Rexona Deodorant ‘Invisible in black and white clothes’

What the ad promises:

“The Rexona ‘Invisible in black and white’ deodorant with MotionSense technology, scent of lily and jasmine with a touch of watermelon, melon and fresh herbs, provides safe protection against perspiration and bad odors for 48 hours, and prevents the appearance of white stains on clothes”.

What actually happens:

We don’t even need to prove the sensation for 48 hours; it is obvious that there is no product capable of doing this in hot weather. To know if the deodorant leaves stains on clothes, we use it immediately after showering and apply a little on the blouse. After 8 hours we did not find any white spot.

doesn’t lie: the product does not leave stains on clothes.

5. Nivea hair fixative

What the ad promises:

The manufacturer promises diamond shine, hair strengthening and a reliable hold all day long without leaving hair stuck.

What actually happens:

We made a ponytail and put a lot of hairspray to secure it. It was hard to judge if he really got a diamond glow because the model’s hair was already beautiful before. Regarding the glued hair part, the manufacturer did not tell the whole truth: the hair didn’t stick, but it had a frozen look, like using any other type of hairspray.

To test the durability, we used a dryer. The hairstyle kept its shape and the product seems to have been approved, although the hair lost some of its volume at night. We thought a windstorm would have undone the hairstyle quickly.

doesn’t liebut the strength of the hairstyle depends a lot on external conditions such as the weather.

6. Neutrogena Lip Balm ‘Norwegian Formula’

“Quick help for dry skin. Neutrogena® ‘Norwegian formula’ lip balm. Quickly saves dry and chapped lips. Developed by dermatologists”

What the ad promises:

The packaging says the balm restores and protects dry and chapped lips instantly.

What actually happens:

After trying out the permanent lip liner, our model’s lips felt considerably drier, something that often happens. The lip balm from Neutrogena, the brand we decided to choose, lived up to its promises: immediately after application the lips felt much better and the dryness disappeared. Of course, the effect is not as long as promised. For this to happen, you need to apply it at least twice a day.

doesn’t lie: the balm is simple and efficient.

7. ROCS Whitening Toothpaste

“Whitens teeth 1.5 shades in a week. Protects from cavities. Fresh breath for longer”

8. Make-Up Expert Bath Makeup Remover

What the ad promises:

What appears on the manufacturer’s website is: “The active elements in the product allow quickly and effectively eliminate makeup without leaving dark spots under the eyes🇧🇷 This same product is sometimes sold with the message ‘No panda effect’.

What actually happens:

The makeup remover can eliminate the foundation, but the problem appears with the mascara. First of all, it doesn’t remove all the mascara from the lashes (we used a normal one, not water resistant). Secondly, the ‘panda effect’ appears: ‘dark circles’ appeared under the eyes and they had to be eliminated with another makeup remover.

advertising lies: the product is only for washing the face, but does not remove makeup. It doesn’t deserve more than a 5.

9. Oil complex for split ends

What the ad promises:

The manufacturer promises revitalization and restoration, and claims that it instantly seals split ends and fights brittleness.

What actually happens:

We decided to apply the product for several days to just one strand of the model’s hair, so that we could compare the effect of use. The result did not take long to appear: the strand where the product was applied really started to look healthier and well cared for. But nothing happened in relation to the ends, which we already expected. Split ends can look better after using an oil, but they can only be eliminated by cutting.

partially lies: the hair is more beautiful, but it does not eliminate the split ends.
