Want to relieve the headache? Eat less bread –

If nothing clears your head, try lightening it on white bread. An economical diet in refined carbohydrate offers less risk of triggering this nuisance, according to a study by the University of Rome, Italy, carried out with 96 women and lasting six months. “Other studies had already shown that foods with a high glycemic index constrict blood vessels and, as a result, cause migraines”, says neurosurgeon Eduardo Barreto, from Rio de Janeiro.

A correction in the diet can bring relief, but the doctor warns: it is not enough to eat less bread, pasta and biscuits. “You have to choose good sources of fat and balance your meals well so as not to overload the liver and get the necessary nutrients.” Chocolate, cheese, wine and some teas can also trigger episodes of pain. If there is any suspicion, keep a food diary and take it to your doctor at your next appointment.
