Want more defined and lighter curls? Try the bowl method – GOOD FORM

TikTok has proven to be the best friend of those who want to improve their hair care. One of the videos of the moment, however, is quite unusual: in it, the person dips wet curly hair into a container of water, diluting the activation cream.

The idea is relatively simple: after washing your hair, and before using a towel to help dry it, you pour some water into a deep bowl or container, apply the styling cream diluted in water to the strands and “rinse ” the hair repeatedly in that same basin, without changing the water in the process. The promise is much more hydrated and defined threads, in addition to being lighter.

DOES THE BOWL METHOD WORK?

For Andressa Pereira, a trichologist at Clínica Healthy, the method is indeed valid for curly hair. “When we dilute the cream in water and place the curl inside, we bring more definition to it”, she explains. “Preferably, this cream has to be very consistent to be able to dilute it with water.”

If you’re worried about back pain, we understand. But the truth is, you don’t need a bowl to apply the method. The most important thing is to dilute the cream before applying it to the hair, remembering not to remove the moisture from the curls with a towel before applying it.

“The benefit of this is not to leave the curl heavy, without that crackle, as if it were a gel, which most curl activators cause”, explains Andressa. “And you can do it every time you wash your head. Washed, you can activate the curl with the cream diluted in water without any problem”.

Not everyone agrees with the idea. “As a professional, I don’t see this method as efficient”, he explains. bruna nunes, hairstylist at Jacques Janine Jardins. “When we seek definition for the curls, we need to bring consistency to them, and we do this through the finishers. From the moment you apply combing cream and then dip your hair in water, you will have a dilution of this product, causing it to lose its designed efficiency.”

That is, in this case, the best thing to do is to test different definition methods and find the one that works best for your hair type and curl. The ideal is always to have the guidance of a professional, however, only day-to-day work will really show how your hair responds to each finishing technique.
