Who has never gone beyond the contour of the lips when applying lipstick, to try to make the mouth look a little bigger? It’s natural that over the years, you’ll notice that the lip region thins out a little. This happens because fat is reabsorbed, collagen and elastin are reduced, causing the region to lose volume and become flaccid.

The good news is that nowadays there are already different procedures capable of altering the region of the lips, making them more voluminous and fuller. We spoke with natural dermatologist Luiza Archer and plastic surgeon Luiza Coutinho, who explained the types of procedures and techniques available.

Filling with hyaluronic acid is still the most recommended option by doctors to increase lip volume. As the application is done using needles, the procedure can be a little painful and therefore an anesthetic ointment is applied beforehand. “This procedure is safe, temporary and moldable. It can be done in several steps and is used not only to provide volume to the region, but also contour and projection. For lips that already have volume, but want more hydration and contour improvement, the skinbooster (injectable hydration) is an excellent option, as it is a product with hyaluronic acid of lesser durability used superficially, which gives vigor and softness to the skin and acts improving wrinkles in bar codes”, explains surgeon Luiza Coutinho. In these cases, the touch-up can be done every 30 days.

Another type of filling indicated and equally safe is fat grafting, which is done with fat, but it is not reversible like the first one and must be performed in a surgical center. “Made with the patient’s own fat, it is an excellent option for those who are intolerant to pain and do not want to perform the filling multiple times”, he says. Fillers with permanent products, such as PMMA, are not safe and can cause long-term inflammatory reactions.

But what are non-surgical procedures?

Products like lip plumpers and some lipsticks with a minty effect can increase the volume, hydrate and even revitalize the lips. The contraindication is for lip pumps, which are suction pumps “they increase lip volume for a few minutes, but can leave marks around the mouth and cause bruising. And some lipsticks contain components that cause vasodilation, such as capsaicin and pepper, and cause burning when applied, in addition to having the possibility of causing an allergic reaction”.

What actives keep the skin of the lips healthy and full?

For the dermatologist Luiza Archer, actives that help in lip hydration and, consequently in the beauty of the lips, are: shea butter, cocoa butter, cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, carnauba wax, hyaluronic acid and squalane . Maintaining hydration in the region is essential, as it acts as a protective barrier against water loss and prevents injuries, such as the famous cracks. “There are countless excellent products on the market, my suggestion is to choose moisturizers with panthenol or camphor compositions and mainly associated with sun protection are the best choices”, completes Coutinho.

In addition, the two doctors comment that as the lips become thinner and smoother, aging gradually after the age of 30, the ideal is to avoid smoking and sun exposure, always exfoliating, moisturizing and protecting the region, to guarantee the maintenance and good looking lip. “Drinking plenty of water is another essential factor in maintaining hydration and health in the mouth area,” says Archer.
