To my distant love.

When we choose a person, we choose for their essence, for the sparkle in their eyes, for their frankness, for their exaggerated laughter, perhaps for their quirks, touch, flavor.

But when we choose a person we’ve never seen, when we decide that it’s her with whom we want to spend those lazy days on Sundays, or a busy Friday, even though we’ve never met before, it’s because the certainty of that meeting I said yes even before we did.

There is no time, circumstance, there is no fear, maybe there will be insecurity, there will be some uncertainties that may come masked as a tightness in the chest, but they soon give in when the other part of this equation takes the first bus, plane, bicycle and decides to go visit you.

He doesn’t care if it’s going to be dating hand in hand on some roadside, if it’s going to be by the sea with a scandalous sunset. He doesn’t care if she’s dressed in polka-dot pajamas or a Lady Gaga look.

She won’t care about having spent the previous night without sleep, she won’t even care about the hole in her stomach that won’t be from hunger but from an inconstant longing that already exists even before the first hug. She doesn’t care if after days of love she will come to a damn goodbye leaving the certainty of wanting more and the voracity of I love you.

They together won’t care about the insecurity, the mess that both lives are, it can even beat that old insecurity of: “If I fell in love, why can’t someone else too?”

But then the memory of the last moment will seal this relationship that, regardless of how precocious, has the tune of a somewhat modern Romeo and Juliet.

And they cling to it to move on, and together they will be ready to face the difficult days that the absence will leave, and they will also feel comforted in each other’s lap, a series, spoon brigadier and a load of love.
