Beauty is multifaceted and cannot have standards. However, history knows people who, thanks to their physical features, have become icons of an entire era. We propose that you take a trip back in time, starting 100 years ago, to observe how the main beauty ideals evolved during the 20th and 21st centuries, from the “Gibson girls” to Kim Kardashian. And, of course, we haven’t forgotten about the men, from Clark Gable to Robert Pattinson.

O awesome.club decided to show who fashionistas have considered ideal for the last 100 years. And at the end of the post, we will tell you what it will be like in 2018.

Women: the “Gibson Girls” became fashionable: beauties with long necks, big eyes and wavy hair. The silhouette also had its own standards: the ideal woman should be tall, slender, and have an artificially thin waist, as well as large breasts and wide hips.

Men: The mustache became the main attribute of a gentleman in the 1910s. They were neatly groomed, cut and waxed. At that time, the canons of tall, well-built men were imposed: boxers, circus performers, and athletes.

Women: this stage, called “Flapper” (“Flapper”), was marked by hairstyles with short hair, a slender and youthful physique, reigning thin eyebrows and a shape of lips that seemed to be a bow to a cupid’s bow. Big eyes, like deer, have also become two main criteria to take into account when cataloging beauty.

Men: the ideal image of a young man of that time responded to the main character of the novel “An American Tragedy”. Jazz was in vogue, as was the search for a relevant and high position in society and luxury, which gave rise to “elegant” hairstyles with a clean-shaven face. Women: thanks to the magnificent movie divas, soft feminine curves are back in fashion. The beauty canon responded to correct facial features, Hollywood-style hair, with long eyelashes, high cheekbones, arched eyebrows, and sunken eyes.

Men: men have not escaped the glamor that reigned in Hollywood, the most important standard of male beauty being the figure of Clark Gable. Thanks to this “King of Hollywood” the fashion of the luxury man prevailed, with a trimmed mustache and straight hair combed, honoring rye whiskey, cigars and pipes.

Women: the typical luxury world of Hollywood was shattered by the harsh reality brought about by the war. Women were still elegant, but the refined beauty of the previous decade faded, being replaced by the image of a strong, war-savvy woman: a sporty, courageous, broad-shouldered figure was valued.

Men: in this difficult time, fashion took a back seat, so hair was no longer combed and fixed with gel, and elegant suits were replaced by a military uniform. This profile was valued in many people, so it is not surprising that Jean Marais was one of the sex symbols of the time, as he was not only a good actor, but also a writer, film and theater director, sculptor, painter and set designer. .

Women: the 50s brought Hollywood divas back to the spotlight and the return to fashion of female forms: firm breasts, narrow shoulders, slender legs, exuberant hips and a slim waist prevailed. The “doll-like” image has become one of the most popular: porcelain skin, a drawn mole, bright lips and bright colors, naive appearance, high hairstyles and curls. And the most popular remedy sold in pharmacies was none other than hydrogen peroxide, basically because “men preferred blondes”.

Men: the pair that accompanied this woman, more similar to a “doll”, had to be strong, with big hands, virile chin, marked nose and, at the same time, soft and sensual lips. So, Marlon Brando reigned, playing the role of rude but incredibly charming man, being the main sex symbol of those times.

Women: the real revolution in the fashion world came from the hands of Twiggy. A few years earlier, no one took her image seriously: at 1.66 m tall and measuring 81-56-81, the model’s weight was only 40 kilograms. But it was with her that the penchant for weight loss and dieting began. The prized body had to be thin, with short hair, pale lips and huge eyes.

Men: in the world of menswear, the 1960s were marked by French classics. Thanks to Alain Delon, the most popular type, we find the clearest example of the time, with blue-gray eyes, thick black eyebrows and sensual lips. All the attention was directed to that peculiar look of the actor and his ironic smile. Women: after the world saw the movie “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”, athletic beauties became a trend. Angelina Jolie’s eyes, nose, cheekbones, lips and body have become the traits women dreamed of to feel in the latest fashion.

Men: men were tired of the careless style. Since the beginning of the 2000s, facial and body care has become not only a routine in women’s lives, but also in men’s. The boys began to spend a lot of time and money taking care of themselves and getting their hair done.

Women: Kim Kardashian has gained many enemies, but many more fans too. Thanks to her, wide hips, olive skin, full lips, high cheekbones and thick eyelashes are in fashion.

Men: but men have regained their relaxed image again: a careless touch, pale skin, and a slightly sleepy appearance. You can be guided by the “main vampire” of the “Twilight” saga: Robert Pattinson. Not in vain, he was named the most handsome man of 2010.

Women: the baby face in 2018. The era of artificial facial features and hypertrophic body parts is over. In fashion, naturalness, chubby cheeks, sweet smile, long legs and thinness reign supreme again.
