The title now belongs to another pearl
According to history, the largest pearl in the world is said to be over 2500 years old, a handful of battles fought in its name and even the great Chinese philosopher Laozi as its owner. She was called in various ways and is now known as “The Pearl Lao-Tzu”🇧🇷 But despite having a mysterious past and steeped in legends, this stone is no longer the biggest pearl🇧🇷 The title has been taken over by another that is twice its size and four times its weight.
Decades on the sideboard of a Filipino home
It’s called the Giga Pearl and was part of the family heritage by Abraham Reyes, a Canadian of Filipino origin. In 1959, a fisherman found a giant oyster in the Philippine Sea and Abraham’s grandfather bought it as a gift for his daughter. When he and his family discovered the white stone inside the shell, didn’t think it was a pearl, nor could it have much value. But since such a peculiar and beautiful discovery, the object has been displayed on the sideboard of his house, along with others from his collection.
Abraham decided to find out what stone that was.
And so, the pearl passed 60 years in the care of his family on a sideboard. However, Abraham is a collector of Philippine culture and valuable antiquities, especially ancient porcelain and rocks. In inheriting the stone, he followed his sixth collector’s sense and took it to be evaluated by gemology experts at the Gemological Institute of America.
The results turned your life around.
That’s how he confirmed he was the owner of the largest natural pearl in the worldevaluated between 60 and 90 million dollars🇧🇷 It measures almost 40 cm high by 20 cm wide and weighs over 27 kg. Holding her would be like carrying four bowling balls. The stone has an uneven surface, so it is described as a baroque pearl. A stunning detail, in addition to its size, is the fact that it is not pearly, but resembles marble, which is something unusual. It’s no surprise that it caught the world’s attention.
The pearl comes from a giant oyster, which is now proven
Pearl is natural a species of giant oysters from the Philippine coasts, the Tridactna Gigas. They are home to the largest molluscs recorded so far, measuring over 1.5 meters and weighing over 200 kilograms. The discovery so amazed Abraham that he decided to make it known to the world and sent New York artist Bethany Krull make a sculpture to expose the beauty and grandeur of the pearl.
