The veterinarian who brought joy back to a quadriplegic dog with the help of therapies

This is the case of Luna, a quadriplegic dog who showed a lot of strength to walk again and lead a normal life. Luna’s case was quite complicated because of the injury and because of her 11 years. She arrived at Centro Rehabilitaria a month after a cervical hernia operation that left her without movement, with the exception of her neck. Circumstances were not easy and the most important thing was that both Luna and the people had a lot of patience to make a good recovery.

Luna had personalized treatments twice a week for 4 months, and had constant follow-up. The chiropractic specialist was not afraid of recovery because she had treated other animals in similar situations in her 8 years of experience. Her passion for animals made her develop a special ability to connect and communicate with them. As she herself said, you have to work hard and be patient for the results to start showing.

Each therapy lasted one hour. Luna had to go through different phases as her situation improved. At first, the exercises were passive and worked to reduce neck pain, relax the musculature and stimulate the nervous system. To work on this last aspect, new exercises were being incorporated, with balance boards and physio roll to work on balance and coordination. Then came the active exercises, with obstacles. In addition, therapies began to focus on the development of muscle tone.

On the other hand, the family was recommended exercises that Luna could do at home, because they could not always go to the medical center. In addition, the family was asked to make some changes at home so that Luna could recover more quickly. The treatment also highlighted the dog’s weight.

We asked the specialist which was the case that most marked her career and she said that all of them are special because it is inevitable that a bond is created between her and the animals. They arrive in difficult conditions and have to visit the medical center many times. Therefore, all cases are special. “Probably, I will never forget my first patient. I dedicated myself a lot and was amazed to see the first results. He was also a quadriplegic dog and I got him to walk away from the medical center.”

In Luna’s case, the rehabilitation was modified many times, but the results were showing and little by little the veterinarian became happy and satisfied. “Watching her jump and run fills me with pride. It’s a feeling I had with Luna and I have with all my patients. In general, the percentage of patients who manage to recover is very high”, shared the veterinarian.

Patients like Luna need to continue therapy throughout their lives, but at a lower frequency. Currently, she goes to the medical center every 15 or 21 days for postural re-education sessions. Thanks to the dedication and perseverance of the specialist and the patience of the family, Luna can walk and be happy like any other dog.
