Adopting a pet is always an act of love and responsibility. The animal, of course, ends up practically becoming a new member of the family. Initially, many people think about taking a puppy home, but animal shelters are also full of young animals (from one year of life) and adults (from five years on) that need a home.
In this post, the awesome.club presents the advantages of taking home an adult puppy, if you are thinking of adopting. Spoiler alert: older doesn’t mean less affection. Quite the contrary, as you will see!
1. No size surprises
Adult dogs are already at their full size. Right away, you know the size and other physical characteristics of the animal. Adopting an already grown dog allows you to know exactly its body composition, avoiding surprises in the future, which can happen when it comes to adopting puppies. And that’s important, especially if the new home doesn’t have enough space.
2. The personality is already known
Adult dogs (like cats) already have a formed personality. You can easily be informed about the animal’s behavior and how it relates to other animals and humans, making it easy to know what to expect from it. Eventual unpleasant surprises, such as those that can happen when adopting a puppy, are unlikely to happen.
3. It is very likely that they are vaccinated and dewormed
In most animal shelters, rescued animals receive the necessary medical treatment, allowing new owners to learn about their veterinary history. Young and adult dogs tend to have their vaccines up to date, reducing the chances of developing diseases. Also, they tend to be dewormed before being handed over to the new family. Not to mention that they are probably already neutered, something that does not happen in the case of puppies.
4. Less crying and more regular meals
Puppies require more time and effort. They eat four times a day and can spend the night crying. Adult dogs, on the other hand, eat less regularly, usually twice a day, and are likely to sleep through the night.
5. They still want to play
It is something related to the previous topic: in the case of dogs, learning is linked to the instinct to play, and this is something that is not lost even as we age. That is, it is wrong to say that older dogs do not learn or have more fun. This has more to do with their personality than their age.
6. Less destruction
Pets, especially dogs, usually go through the phase where they destroy everything, as they see objects around them as toys to bite and tear. A puppy’s intense energy often translates into even more destruction. Adopting an adult means avoiding the stage of eating shoes, furniture and whatever else is within reach.
7. They dream of finding a new family
“I’ve been here for 762 days (2 years). Please give me a chance”
Generally, adult animals in a position to be adopted are squandering the desire to have a family that gives them affection. When they don’t have behavioral problems, they tend to get used to their new home quickly. The adaptation of puppies from one year onwards tends to be easy and without major challenges.
8. Total loyalty
If the adult dog you adopt has been abandoned before or has always lived on the streets, it is very possible that it will be more affectionate and faithful. It will be an animal in need of love, with a great desire to give and receive affection.
9. They know how to behave in society
In the case of animals that have lived in shelters and lived with other animals, it is easier to adapt to homes where other dogs already live. The same goes for when the adopted dog passes by another pet during daily walks down the street. In the event that the dog has experienced a trauma that makes life in society difficult in some way, the shelter staff will do even the impossible to resolve the situation, clarifying all your doubts.
10. They require less dedication
Of course, all animals require a certain amount of time, whether to play, care for, take care of hygiene and food. But adult dogs are less work than puppies. When their basic needs are taken care of they enjoy their time resting and having fun.
11. The learning process is faster
Adult dogs are already mature, which allows them to understand more quickly what is being taught. All learning is a process that takes time, but when it involves puppies, it slows down. When they are between 1 and 5 years old, puppies are more focused on education, requiring less time for training.
12. Increase the chances of a good tune
If the pet you are going to adopt is in a shelter or temporary home, the caregivers will be able to help you define whether the physical space in your home is adequate for your needs and whether your friend will be able to adapt to your life routine in the face of the time that you go outside and other everyday aspects that influence the harmony between animal and human.
13. They are ideal for older people
Animals are great companions, something that is well regarded by everyone, especially elderly people. In this sense, adult dogs and cats are ideal, as they stimulate a sense of partnership, but with calmer behaviors and less need for physical activity.
14. Being able to give them a second chance
The possibility of giving a pet a new opportunity is something that causes immense satisfaction. Giving an animal a home in need is sure to have all the affection reciprocated. In the case of older pets, they may even have less life ahead of them, but this period will certainly be marked by love, friendship and loyalty at all times. Does anyone doubt that it’s worth it?
