The true story of the Dybbuk box and where it is now

I have been interested in research into the supernatural and paranormal for many years.

What is the Dybbuk box?

The Dybbuk (sometimes spelled Dibbuk) box is an item originally listed for sale on eBay in September 2001 by a man named Kevin Mannis. She was eventually sold to Losif Nietzke, who was a student in Missouri at the time. Nietzke soon put the item up for sale and sold it to Jason Haxton, the director of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine at AT Still University. Haxton wrote about his experience with this mysterious wine cabinet in a book titled The Dibbuk box. Eventually, Zak Bagans bought the crate from Haxton.

The Dybbuk Box is believed to be haunted and many stories circulate about the paranormal happenings surrounding the box. The original salesman, Kevin Mannis, provided the most accurate account of the effect of the wine case.

What is a dybbuk?

In Jewish mythology, a dybbuk (or dybbuk) is a malevolent spirit believed to be the lost soul of a dead person. Instead of going to heaven, the soul gets trapped in an object and stays there until someone helps free the spirit.

The word dybbuk comes from an old Hebrew word meaning “to cling”.

What happened to Kevin Mannis?

Mannis bought the wardrobe from an estate for a Polish woman who died at the age of 103. The deceased’s granddaughter insisted that Kevin take the item after purchase, having offered to return it to her, thinking it had deep sentimental value.

The granddaughter told him that the grandmother kept the box hidden and would not let anyone open it.

Kevin took the item to his furniture repair shop and put it in the basement. Leaving the store one day while running an errand, he soon received a call from his frantic salesman that someone in the store was swearing and smashing things. Mannis returned to the store to find the basement lights were broken and the room full of cat urine. The employee left and never came back.

The dark power of the Dybbuk box

When Kevin started working on the box, he decided not to rework it and instead to clean it. He prepared it to give to his mother as a birthday present. His mother came into the shop so the two could go out for lunch, whereupon he gave her the box; As Kevin went away briefly to make a call, an employee came up to him and said there was something wrong with his mother.

He returned to his mother to find her sitting in a chair, expressionless, crying and completely unresponsive. She was taken to the hospital and found to have had a stroke and lost her ability to speak for a time. During this time, she could only speak with a magic tablet, which she used to point at letters to spell words. When he asked her how she was doing, she said, “No present.” When he said he gave her a gift, she emphasized: “Hate gift”.

Then he gave the box to his sister. She kept it for a week and returned it. He gave it to his brother and his brother’s wife, who kept it for three days and returned it. The brother said it smelled like jasmine flowers and his wife said it smelled like cat pee.

Kevin gave it to his girlfriend, who soon asked him to sell it to her. He sold it to a middle-aged couple and three days later found the box outside his store that said “This has a bad darkness.”

The cursed box

So Kevin took it home. While he had the box at home, he started having nightmares in which he was walking with a good friend, and when he looked the friend in the eye, he saw something evil looking back; the friend turned into a horrible demonic witch who continued to beat him. He woke up with bruises and spots all over his body.

When his sister, brother and his brother’s wife came to stay the night, they all had the same dream. Turns out Kevin’s girlfriend had the same dream when she had the box.

Mannis also began seeing Shadowen beings in the house, as did visitors. He placed the box in an outdoor storage room and was soon alerted by the smoke detector in the room. When he investigated, there was no smoke, but the smell of cat pee, which also permeated his home at the time.

He took it inside and began searching the internet for information about the box. He fell asleep and had the nightmare and woke up at 4:30 a.m. feeling someone was breathing on his neck and smelling of jasmine flowers. He saw the shadowy figure lurking down the hall again.

A nightmare caused by the dybbuk box?

I find myself walking with a friend, usually someone I know well and trust at some point in my dreams. I look into the eyes of the person I’m with. That’s when I realize there’s something else, something evil looking back at me. At this point in my dream, the person I am with turns into the most cruel, demonic witch I have ever seen. This hag then proceeds to beat the living tar out of me.

List the Dybbuk box on eBay

At this point, he listed the item on eBay in hopes that someone who knew more about the paranormal would get their hands on it and know what to do with it.

In June 2003, he finally sold it to a University of Missouri student named Losif Nietzke. Nietzke put it back up for sale on eBay 8 months later after he and roommates suffered from insomnia and illness in the presence of the dreaded item.

Nietzke was able to sell it for $280 to Jason Haxton, who had heard about it from a student who was also one of Nietzke’s roommates.

Jason Haxton and the Dybbuk box

Haxton claims to have experienced paranormal activity in the presence of the box, although he also states that it had an anti-aging effect on him.

He claims he had welts and hives when he first had the box, and he even had coughing up blood and choking. He has said that touching it turns it almost into a liquid state. He tells that while he had the box he saw strange lights and shadows.

Nonetheless, Haxton has taken a fairly intelligent and academic approach to understanding the box. He has enlisted the help of scientists, paranormalists, Kabbalists, and Wiccans to turn the box into a more manageable state for him to keep. He believes the power contained within the Cabinet to be neutral, but plays off who comes into contact with it. Its ultimate goal is to understand and reveal the “Truth” and that it was looking for the right owner to help it.

For a time, Haxton kept the box safe in an acacia wood ark lined with 24k gold and tucked it away in his cave to keep it unobtrusive. However, he recently admitted that he put it in a military-grade shockproof container buried somewhere where it’s well hidden and undetectable.

Zak Bagans acquires the box

Zak Bagans, known for his work on the TV show ghost adventures, eventually bought Jason Haxton’s Dybbuk box. Bagans has the box as part of his collection of paranormal objects at his Las Vegas haunted museum. Bagans will not allow the public to see the box. However, if you really want to see them, you must sign a waiver that releases Bagans from liability if anything bad happens to you while viewing the box or immediately afterwards.

Is the Dybbuk box a fake?

Despite the strange occurrences that have happened to those who came into contact with the box, many people don’t believe it’s anything special. Many skeptics believe that the owners of the box, believing it was cursed, attributed their unhappiness to the box’s possession.

Chris French of the Anomalist Psychology Research Unit at Goldsmiths College expressed skepticism about the idea of the box being haunted or cursed, saying:

already prepared to look out for bad things. When you think you’ve been cursed, you inevitably explain the bad things happening with what you feel is the cause. Let’s put it this way: I would be happy to own this object.

While French is quite right, one cannot discount the strange events that have happened to every owner of the box since Kevin Mannis.

The boxes are real, I held one. I was much younger then and didn’t know what it was. The box had strange letters as it was in a different language I didn’t know. The man who owned it asked me “what do the letters say” I said “I don’t know”, he said “I thought you would, well you will”. Many years later I remembered the box and found out what he meant. The answer is that I am a Christian and am now studying and teaching Hebrew. The letters engraved on the box were modern Hebrew. The man who once owned the box shot himself. He bought the box at a flea market in Joplin Mo. I don’t know where it is now. I wrote this to warn people that demons are attached to these boxes and they are dangerous. The photo of the box in this story, inside the pad where the Hebrew is written, says Shalom, meaning peace, without being broken or missing. Only Adonai, the only true God”, can give this blessing.
