Can Cats See Ghosts? How to tell if your cat is seeing a ghost

How to tell if your cat is seeing a ghost

At exactly 10pm every night, my cat goes from sleeping to staring at the ceiling restlessly, howling and pretending to be chasing something. She will go from staring for a minute to frantic, chaotic zooming, hissing at inanimate objects, and gasping. She then returns to her usual nursing and resting place as if nothing ever happened.

I grew up in a pretty haunted house and we had and still have a lot of ghost activity in our house (see my other article “5 Signs Your House Is Haunted”). People have died in my house, so it’s not surprising that there has been ghost activity here for many years. Having experienced many encounters myself, I have always wondered if cats can see ghosts. From what my cats have shown over the years, they seem to get in a good mood and are able to see the deceased.

10 signs your cat is seeing a ghost

They suddenly startle for no reason (arched back, fluffy tail, big eyes). You stare at absolutely nothing with a continuous gaze for a long time. If there is any unusual noise at night, your cat will be next to you and just watching. You are always on a mission (disappear and reappear). They meow, hiss, or growl relentlessly at random things (like closed doors). They have a favorite spot that they return to regularly to investigate. They get scared randomly and hide with no obvious trigger. Your eyes follow movements in erratic patterns when there is nothing there. You sense that something is in the house and your cat behaves accordingly. Her home is knowingly haunted. . . and you have a cat

useful information

Cats were considered demigods in ancient Egypt. Egyptians even mummified cats and punished those who harmed them.

Why Cats Can See Things We Can’t See

Most of us know that accounts of cats seeing spirits are mostly anecdotal: on one side of the spectrum we have the non-believers and on the other end of the spectrum the believers.

Cats have 24 vibrissae, or whiskers, that send information to their barrel cortex (similar to the brain’s visual cortex). Because of this, cats can essentially create a 3D map of their surroundings — they can also use their vibrissae to sense air movement.

With these extra gifts, cats may be able to discover things that we humans are insensitive to. So if you live in an active household, your cat may pick up on things that you are not.

Can Cats See Things We Can’t?

Humans and cats have very different gifts when it comes to sight. Humans are blessed with a range of color and detail during the day, and cats have the ability of night vision, but lack detail during the day. However, objects that move slowly to humans can appear stationary to cats.

Cats have the advantage of high rod receptor concentration but the disadvantage of low cone receptor concentration (thus high detail in low light but muted colors). They have a wider field of vision compared to humans, but their visual clarity is lower than that of a human (humans have 20-20 vision; compared to 20-100 to 20-200 – so cats are myopic).

Cats see similarly to a color blind person. You can see blues and greens, but reds and pinks are confusing. However, because of their tapetum, cats only need 1/6 the amount of light that humans need to see, giving them the benefit of enhanced night vision ability.

How cats see the world

Do cats hear things humans can’t?

Cats have movable ears (they can be pointed in the direction of a sound to locate its source). In addition to high-pitched sounds, cats can also detect ultrasounds. Why is that? They have a special chamber that expands their hearing to a full 8 octave range. They can therefore hear up to 64kHz – 1 octave above the range of dogs.

Why are cats so weird?

While the data is inconclusive and based mostly on anecdotal evidence, it is well known among pet lovers that cats are indeed sensitive. You can read a person without getting close to them. Cats will shy away from people they don’t like and will approach people they like. They can also assess situations and energy very well.

I have always believed in the spiritual world and I have also seen my cats and animals behaving in strange ways. I think they’re acknowledging energy that I may feel but can’t see – and I’m quite sensitive.

I feel like animals are protectors. I feel safer when they are near them – they feel every little movement, hear every tremble at night and every movement in the house. If you’re sensitive to ghosts or the paranormal, or even suspect you live in a haunted house, you’re lucky to have a feline companion. Cats are wonderful protectors.

Normal or Abnormal?

If your pet is behaving erratically, it’s important that your veterinarian perform a regular check-up to rule out any neurological problems or medical conditions that could be causing their behavior.

Our cat often meows and runs behind the TV or behind doors and likes a kind of backflip. She runs through the house and stairs on the ceilings and especially in our bedroom. She also puts things in her food bowl that we have no idea where they came from. When what it sees becomes really bothersome, it growls and hisses in a very unusual sound pattern that doesn’t match its general tone. She kicks back and forth on objects for long periods of time.

I have a little story when I was a little kid that I spent the summer holidays with my nans when one night their cat started staring at the corner of the living room wall when suddenly the light went on and his fur stood up with his fur pulled up back in attack position its eyes widened it started growling and hissing almost spitting at something we couldn’t see it must have seemed dangerous to the cat I’ve heard cats protect their owners I wonder if that’s why the Egyptians worship the cat as stone statues, the scriptures and images appear there

Yes, there is spectral vision that is very different from human vision. They also have a third eye as do all mammals, but unlike us, they are not ego-driven like us. I loved my cat and I miss her, unfortunately he was killed at a young age

Thanks for sharing the Silas777! In fact, cats do a great job of keeping habitats rodent-free. Interesting that they were so feared, because in some cultures they are great protectors. Cheers to our cats!

The Romans believed cats were witches in disguise who worshiped Satan and killed them all (really grown up!)! But when the Black Death appeared, there were no cats to protect the people, so the Romans died and their empire disappeared.

Thanks for reading Lora – I look forward to reading yours – Our Spiritual Connection with Cats. I definitely agree with your statement about dog and cat protectors. Cats have such a spiritual flair. They have always come to my aid to tell me something and they certainly keep the air “clean”. I was really interested in the cat vision comparison because I always assumed that they see more vivid colors than we do. . .

You did a wonderful job on a very interesting subject, Layne. I’ve always known cats have amazing senses, stronger than ours and their intuition to pick up things we can’t see or feel is extraordinary. My cats have always amazed me with their psychic perception through cats! The graphics were very helpful in explaining the differences between feline and human vision and I really enjoyed the videos as well. As I said in my article Our Spiritual Connection with Cats, “Dogs are the protectors of our bodies, while cats are the protectors of our minds when we sleep our dreams.” Thank you for the great article about our feline companions.

Hi Lisabeth – I believe they are our protectors. They see what they cannot see. Thank you for sharing your story. Mine is sleeping at my feet right now.

Lisabeth on June 24, 2019:

2 nights ago I had a very restless night. I felt uncomfortable and heavy. It was late at night and suddenly my right leg started to burn. I turned on the light. Something unknown scratched my thigh. I had 1 single dark red scratch on my thigh. I tried to ignore it and pretend I was sleeping out of fear. My cat came to my bed and sat on my pillow. She licked my hand and face. She made me feel safe until I could fall asleep.
