Flickering Candle Meaning & Other Signs (Flame Perception)

Have you ever wondered about a flickering candle meaning or why some spells seem to burn brighter than others? Or what could it mean if the candle goes out in the middle of your casting? This article describes some of the most common magic candle situations and how to guess the meaning of their flames.

What is candle magic?

Candle magic is a form of ritual or sorcery that invokes the element of fire to bring more energy and power to a casting. It is a process where we infuse a candle’s wax with our own magical intent and desires, just as the candle’s original artisans infused their wax with fragrance or pigments.

Most commonly candle magic, it is enough to seal your intention within you, then simply light and burn to slowly release its energy into the world, but some witches find a deeper meaning in the candle flame itself.

The meaning of the clean burning candle

A clean, naturally burning candle is a happy sign that your spell is working in harmony with your own energies. A clean burn is also a sure sign that you’ve captured perfect timing and intent for the spell you’re about to cast, and that the spell contains the right amount of energy to ensure it occurs in its own time .

The meaning of the big candle flame

A large candle flame burning brightly indicates a spell that will work quickly and surely, beyond the caster’s desires or intentions, and that there is more than enough power to cast it with little or no resistance. Likewise, a large flame rapidly burning through its wick could indicate a spell that is quick-acting yet short-lived.

The small candle flame meaning

A small flame that burns evenly but quietly can often mean that your spell is working very slowly, or maybe just subtly, but is actually working. You may also encounter stiff resistance or your request may take longer to manifest than you initially thought.

The fighting candle meaning

A magic flame that is struggling, that is, one that burns little and is about to drown in its own wax, is generally not an ideal sign when working with candle magic. Such a resulting flame could be a sign of improper timing and misalignment (e.g. attempting a summoning spell at a time when magic like that of the waning moon is being banished), or it could indicate your own Energy is not up to the task. You have set yourself and that more inner focus is needed before attempting the casting again.

If that’s the case and the flame drowns, it’s best that you take a step back to investigate again and maybe refocus on what exactly you’re trying to accomplish, adjusting the timing if necessary, or more Requesting power for the spell from the guiding spirit or divinity you wish to work with.

The meaning of the dancing candle

A dancing flame doesn’t seem to know where to stay. This is often a sign that your spell is indeed going to happen, but that it isn’t necessarily manifesting in the way you envisioned or perhaps hoped. The sporadic movements of a dancing flame suggest sporadic energies within the spell itself – the kind that lend themselves to unforeseen results or circumstances.

Although dancing flames tend to represent the unpredictable nature of a spell and can potentially be a cause for concern. It is important to note that they are not always a sign that something has gone wrong. Because while the result may not be what you were looking for, it could be just what you needed.

The flickering candle meaning

Sometimes a candle flame will dimmer and lighten, dim and brighten, like someone turning a light switch on and off. This phenomenon is called a flickering flame and is considered in some folk magics to indicate that there are spirits around the caster.

When the magic candle is used for devotional work (e.g. with the divine or other spiritual guides) a flickering flame can mean that the invocation was successful and that your prayers have been acknowledged.

Also, a flickering candle flame can prove slightly trance inducing and so could be used as an opportunity to search the fire for additional insight into the nature of your work and any energies that might affect your spell.

The meaning of the cracking candle

A cracking or loud candle flame is often said to indicate communication with (or interference from) outside forces. The hiss, sputter, and whistle of a magic candle can sometimes contain cryptic messages from ancestors or spirits. Try to listen to them carefully and decipher what they are trying to say.

A. A cracking candle can also represent the presence of alien magic surrounding the focus of your spell, e.g. B. when the effects of another caster’s spells are in play, such as B. someone else’s repelling spell, love spell, etc

The meaning of the extinct candle

So your magic candle went out? No panic! A candle that goes out is not always a bad omen. However, it almost always indicates that the work ended on its own, either through completion of the spell or due to interference from a stronger opposing force.

More often than not, when a spell candle goes out mid-work, it means your petition or spell – whatever it may be – will not manifest without first stepping back, refocusing your energies, and attempting the spell again. Although in some rarer cases this could simply mean that the goal of the work has already been accomplished and no further magical support or energy is required.

When mundane hits magick

A final note from the author:

Anyone familiar with candle making could tell you what causes the strange behaviors listed above in candles, strictly, not magically. A high flame is caused by an uncut wick. Black soot is the result of oils or dyes being exposed to high heat. And a candle suddenly going out could be the sign of an unfriendly spirit…or just a stiff breeze.

Of course, we all know that the different physical properties of candles can easily cause them to burn differently.

However, I find that one of the most useful caveats about delving into the magical arts is that anything could be an omen. That’s part of the beauty of it all and dare I say the fun of it! Once you bring a mundane object into a magical or sacred space, it becomes a tool for understanding and discovery! Be it a candle, a piece of parchment, a bird feather or even a spoon! The magic it contains comes out of you.
