On Friday, October 9, Amazon Prime Video premiered Súbete a mi moto, the biographical series about Menudo, the biggest boy band in Latin America.
Across its 15 episodes, the series introduces several of the members of this iconic Puerto Rican group and shows how they rose to fame under the guidance of their manager, Edgardo Díaz.
However, there was another man who played an equally—if not more—important role in Menudo’s journey: Joselo Vega. This is his story.
Who is José Luis Vega?
José Luis Vega was born on May 11, 1962, in Puerto Rico. From a young age, he showed great talent for dancing.
His connection to Menudo began thanks to Beddie Rodríguez, the group’s choreographer at the time, who took Joselo on as an apprentice.
At just 15 years old, following Beddie’s resignation, José Luis stepped into the role of choreographer and creative director for the band. It was then that he adopted the stage name Joselo Vega.
Joselo Vega and Menudo
As the band’s creative director, Joselo was responsible for designing their image—ensuring that their dance moves and wardrobe aligned with the fashion trends of the time.
Tight pants and metallic-toned shirts became part of Menudo’s signature style until they transitioned to a more rock-inspired look in the late 1980s.
But Joselo was far more than just another employee.
For the 14 years he worked with the band, Joselo served as a mentor, supporter, and confidant to the members. He was often seen as a counterbalance to Edgardo Díaz’s strict management style.
Joselo left the group in 1991, during its period of decline. His departure came shortly after a scandal involving Rubén Gómez and Sergio Blass, who were arrested at the Miami airport for possession of illegal substances.
Even after leaving Menudo, Joselo continued his career in choreography, going on to work with the Mexican pop star Yuri.
Joselo Vega and Ricky Martin
In 1989, after six years with Menudo, Ricky Martin left the group to pursue a solo career.
When Joselo resigned in 1991, Ricky quickly invited him to join his new team. Joselo brought his experience and talent to help transform Ricky into a global superstar.
Their relationship became very close—so much so that Ricky Martin has stated that Joselo, along with his mother Doña Nereida, played a crucial role in both his artistic and spiritual development.
Because of this bond, Ricky Martin’s fans also hold deep affection for Joselo and often send him birthday wishes and messages of gratitude.
Joselo Vega in Súbete a mi moto
For the making of Súbete a mi moto, Joselo Vega contributed his own testimony, sharing what life was like for the Menudo boys behind the scenes.
He offered insights into their daily routines on tour, during recordings, and at the group’s rehearsal home in Orlando.
In the series, Joselo Vega is portrayed by Cuban singer and actor Sian Chiong, known for his roles in shows like La Mexicana y El Güero.
As a musician, Chiong was part of the bachata boyband Ángeles and has also released solo tracks such as Me Mata el Dolor, Señorita, and Amuleto.
Now that you know the full story of Joselo Vega, the man behind Menudo’s choreography and image, you can enjoy Súbete a mi moto with a deeper appreciation—or rewatch it to see his character in a new light.
