The story of the lost wallet in SP that will make you have faith in Brazil

While many people think they should always take advantage of every situation, even if it means putting someone else behind, fortunately we come across everyday examples of ethics, empathy and respect for others. One of these stories is that of journalist Irving Alves, a resident of São Paulo, who lost his wallet with money, documents and credit cards on a busy avenue in the city. What he didn’t expect was that two people beyond correct would appear in his life.

“That seemed like just any day. I left the house with my wallet in my pocket and, despite living close to work, I decided to take a bus, as I was late. In the 5 minutes of commute, I was totally distracted by using my cell phone and thinking about the tasks that I would have to do that day at work. I was so worried about answering emails and messages on WhatsApp that I didn’t notice when, when getting off the bus, my wallet fell into my pocket, lying on the sidewalk on Avenida Brigadeiro Luis Antônio, one of the busiest avenues in the city of São Paulo.

Nonchalantly, I arrived at my job and began to perform my duties. The surprise was total when, about 1 hour later, a then unknown person, Mayara Bussotti, sent me the following private message via Facebook: “A colleague of mine found a wallet, the name matches hers, did you lose it?”

I was astonished. Actually my wallet was not with me. I immediately thought of the R$500 I had withdrawn the night before to make some payments that day. I also figured that credit cards shouldn’t be there anymore either. “I’m going to have a tremendous headache to block everything and ask for new cards to be sent”, I thought.

However, to my complete surprise, nothing was lost. All thanks to Agueda Guimarães, who passed on the same sidewalk just after me and, by a stroke of fate, tripped over my wallet. She picked it up from the ground and, determined to do the right thing, decided that she would do her best to find the owner of the object.

That’s when my second ‘savior’ came on the scene: Mayara, who works together with Agueda. Arriving at the workplace, Agueda asked Mayara for help trying to find me on social media. And she did! As I have a name that is not very common, Mayara didn’t have much trouble locating me.

In proof that, despite having lost my wallet, my day was very lucky, Agueda and Mayara work in a building that is a few meters from my job. Immediately after chatting with Mayara on Facebook, I went to meet them.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of not only having recovered all my belongings, but also seeing the satisfaction on the faces of those true ‘guardian angels’, who were visibly glad they had done something that only correct and honest people would do.

After the scare, having found the wallet with absolutely everything inside and having met two such ethical people, it is clear that, as much as the world is full of examples of people who don’t mind leaving others behind, acting with ethics and empathy has the power to transform anyone’s day—and life—.

I don’t think I need to say how much I was flooded with a feeling of gratitude: to Agueda and Mayara for dedicating a few moments of their day in an attempt to find me. Gratitude also to my parents, who gave me a different name, essential for my ‘saviors’ to find me on Facebook.”
